What Nvidia does

NVIDIA was incorporated in California in April 1993.[1] Sutter Hill Ventures managing director Tench Coxe joined the board in June 1993 as well.[1] The prospectus priced the offering at $12 a share.[1] NVIDIA's 10-Q says its non-marketable equity securities are primarily stakes in privately held companies.[2],[3] In November 2025 it committed up to $10 billion to Anthropic.[4] Its corporate venture arm, NVentures, backs earlier-stage companies such as world-model startup Reactor.[5] NVIDIA also buys startups: in September 2026 it agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12,930,300,000.[6],[3] Fortune reported in June 2026 that it had acquired Kumo AI, a four-year-old startup building prediction models, on undisclosed terms.[7],[3]

Nvidia sells the GPUs behind the AI buildout, reported $96.2B in quarterly revenue, and has become one of the largest startup investors anywhere.

What Nvidia does

Nvidia is a Santa Clara, California chip company that sells the GPUs and systems used to train and run AI models, and it describes itself in its filings as an AI and accelerated computing company. Variety describes it more plainly as a major supplier of hardware to power AI applications. Almost all of its business now comes from data centers: of the $96.2 billion of revenue it reported for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, Data Center revenue was $89.0 billion, up 117% from a year earlier.[1],[2]

Jensen Huang, the company's founder and CEO, framed the quarter this way in the release: compute is now revenue, and demand is coming from multiple frontier labs scaling in parallel, a growing open-model ecosystem and physical AI, rather than from one lab driving the buildout as it did a year earlier. For the following quarter Nvidia guided to revenue of $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%, and said it was not assuming any Data Center compute revenue from China.[1]

IPO and ownership

Revenue for the quarter ended July 26, 2026 was $96.2 billion, up 18% from the prior quarter and 106% from a year earlier. GAAP and non-GAAP gross margins were both 75.0%. GAAP net income was $53,954 million for the quarter. Nvidia reports on a fiscal year that ends in late January, so this was the second quarter of its fiscal 2027.[1]

Nvidia trades on Nasdaq under NVDA. CompaniesMarketCap put its market capitalization at $5.094 trillion as of October 2026. The company listed on Nasdaq in 1999; we could not reach a reputable primary or press source for the IPO price, proceeds or its venture backers, so those details are left out rather than guessed.[3],[1]

Jensen Huang is Nvidia's founder and chief executive officer. Colette Kress is executive vice president and chief financial officer. Toshiya Hari handles investor relations and Mylene Mangalindan corporate communications, per the contact block on the company's earnings release.[1]

Investments

Nvidia has become one of the largest startup investors in the world, both directly from its balance sheet and through NVentures, which SiliconANGLE describes as the venture capital arm of Nvidia Corp. The biggest commitments have gone to the frontier labs that buy its chips.[4],[5]

In September 2025 Nvidia said it planned to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI under a letter of intent to deploy 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for OpenAI's next generation of AI infrastructure. The investment it finalized in early 2026 as part of OpenAI's $110 billion round came in at $30 billion, well short of the original pledge.[5],[6]

In November 2025 Nvidia and Microsoft committed to invest up to $10 billion and up to $5 billion respectively in Anthropic as part of a partnership announced by Microsoft. In March 2026 Huang said the OpenAI and Anthropic investments were likely to be Nvidia's last in both companies, because the opportunity to invest closes once they go public.[7],[6]

NVentures was among the investors in Harmonic AI's $120 million Series C at a $1.45 billion valuation in January 2026. In April 2026 NVentures and Atlassian joined Legora's Series D extension alongside Adams Street Partners, Airtree, Barclays, Geodesic Capital and Insight Partners; The Next Web reported the extension added $50 million, bringing the round to $600 million at a $5.6 billion valuation, and called it Nvidia's first investment in legal tech.[4],[8]

Acquisitions

On September 3, 2026 Huang announced that Nvidia had reached a deal to acquire Hugging Face, which operates a platform for building open-source AI models, for $12.93 billion. Variety reports Hugging Face was founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf in New York City, and that more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use it to share more than 3 million models. TechCrunch had reported the talks a week earlier, citing The Information on a $12.9 billion price.[2],[9]

In October 2026 Nvidia was reported to be in advanced talks to acquire or expand its stake in Reflection AI, a US open-weight model startup. That is a report of talks only; no agreement has been announced.[10]
