Two Deals, One Direction

Nvidia said this week it will invest up to $3 billion in Lancium, the Blackstone-backed power developer that owns the land and grid connections behind Stargate's first operational data-center campus in Abilene, Texas. The initial $2 billion buys Nvidia roughly a 20% stake in Lancium, whose power-and-land portfolio carries an enterprise value near $10 billion; a further $1 billion follows if Lancium hits certain grid-hookup thresholds, according to The Information and Yahoo Finance. Lancium is reportedly exploring an IPO of its own in 2027.

Days earlier, on SpaceX's first earnings call as a public company, Elon Musk said SpaceX will build its AI computing infrastructure exclusively around Nvidia chips for the foreseeable future, naming the still-unreleased Vera Rubin architecture specifically. Nvidia shares rose 2.2% on the news, and Musk added that SpaceX expects to receive "a very significant percentage" of Nvidia's GPU output next year, according to Forbes. Neither company disclosed a dollar figure for the compute commitment.

From Vendor to Equity Holder

These are two different kinds of transactions -- one an equity stake, the other a supply commitment -- but they share a mechanism Nvidia's chip-sales business never had on its own: leverage that compounds. A GPU order is a single transaction; Nvidia ships the part, the customer pays, and next quarter both sides renegotiate from scratch. A 20% equity stake in the company that owns the land and power hookups underneath a hyperscale campus is different -- it gives Nvidia a claim on the site's economics whether or not that specific site ever buys another Nvidia chip. An exclusivity commitment from a customer as large and as public as SpaceX is different too: it removes a competitive bid process for years, not one purchase order.

Pulse tracked a version of this shift two weeks ago, when six separate rounds pushed more than $21 billion into reactors, chip fabs, satellites and grid batteries in a single week -- none of it going to a foundation-model lab. Nvidia's Lancium stake and the SpaceX exclusivity deal both extend that same logic one layer further: rather than just selling into the infrastructure boom, the chipmaker with the most leverage in the entire AI stack is now taking ownership positions inside it.

Why Nvidia Needs the Leverage

The strategic logic isn't subtle. Nvidia's core business -- selling GPUs to whoever will pay the most for the largest allocation -- depends entirely on demand staying ahead of supply. AMD, Google's own TPUs, and a growing list of custom-silicon programs at Amazon, Meta and Microsoft are all chipping away at that dynamic from different angles. A stake in the physical infrastructure a customer needs regardless of which chip vendor wins, and an exclusivity clause locking in a marquee customer before a competitor can bid for the business, are both ways of hedging against a future where GPU allocation stops being the only lever Nvidia controls.

The Competitive Landscape

Lancium isn't the only power developer courting AI-infrastructure capital this cycle -- Valar Atomics and Base Power both closed billion-dollar rounds in the same general window Pulse has covered, and Blackstone itself has been one of the most active infrastructure investors in the sector broadly. What's different about the Lancium deal is the buyer: it's not a private equity fund or an infrastructure-focused VC taking the stake, it's the chip company whose customers actually need that power. On the SpaceX side, the exclusivity commitment puts Nvidia in more direct competition with whatever AMD is offering hyperscalers through its own AI-chip acquisitions, and with the custom-silicon programs Google and Amazon have been running specifically to reduce their own Nvidia dependency.

The Numbers In Context

A $3 billion commitment is a rounding error against Nvidia's own balance sheet, but it's not a rounding error against Lancium, which values the entire company plus its land and power portfolio at roughly $10 billion -- meaning Nvidia's stake alone would represent a meaningful chunk of that valuation if the full $3 billion is eventually drawn. On the SpaceX side, the exclusivity commitment arrives against a backdrop of real spending: SpaceX's own Q2 capital expenditures came to $18.37 billion, with $15.83 billion of that specifically earmarked for AI infrastructure -- a number large enough that even a modest share of future orders represents a significant revenue line for Nvidia.

What Founders and GPs Should Take From This

The read for anyone with AI-infrastructure exposure isn't "Nvidia is diversifying for diversification's sake" -- it's that the company with the most capital and the most leverage in the AI stack is using both to convert one-time chip sales into recurring, structural claims on the businesses beneath it. For a GP evaluating a power, land or interconnect deal in this sector right now, the diligence question has changed: it's no longer just "does this company have a signed customer," it's "does this company have a signed customer with enough leverage of their own to extract equity or exclusivity instead of just paying list price." Founders building anything adjacent to the compute stack should assume Nvidia is a potential equity partner as much as a potential vendor going forward.

The Counterweight

Neither deal is without risk to Nvidia itself. A 20% stake in Lancium ties Nvidia's own balance sheet to the execution risk of a single power developer's build-out schedule -- precisely the kind of multi-year permitting and construction timeline that has slipped before in this sector. And an exclusivity commitment from SpaceX cuts both ways: it removes Nvidia's flexibility to reallocate that GPU supply to a higher bidder if one emerges, and it makes Nvidia more exposed to SpaceX-specific risk -- including the same unlock-driven stock volatility and heavy AI capex spending that has already pressured SpaceX's own share price since its June IPO. Neither transaction has disclosed enough detail -- exact share counts, exact GPU volumes -- for outside investors to independently verify how good these terms actually are for Nvidia versus its counterparties.

What's worth tracking next isn't another funding round -- it's whether other hyperscalers respond to Nvidia's Lancium stake by taking their own direct equity positions in the power developers they depend on, which would confirm this is becoming standard practice rather than a one-off hedge.
