Chinese AI lab Moonshot is seeking access to more of Nvidia's advanced Blackwell-generation chips to train its next model, Kimi K4, according to Bloomberg and The Information, just days after the company released the 2.8 trillion-parameter Kimi K3 as the largest open-weight model to date.
The chip pursuit lands squarely amid a live controversy over how Moonshot accessed the hardware behind K3 in the first place. A White House official has accused the Beijing-based startup of illegally accessing banned Nvidia GB300 chips and of unlawfully distilling US AI models in the course of training Kimi K3. Notably, the allegation is not that Moonshot physically smuggled chips into China -- it's that the company secured access to GB300-equipped servers through infrastructure located in Thailand, effectively routing around the direct export restriction rather than violating it in the most obvious way.

That distinction matters for how the export-control regime actually functions in practice. US restrictions are built primarily around preventing advanced chips from physically entering China, but cloud-based access to overseas servers running those chips represents a harder-to-police workaround -- one that Moonshot's case suggests is already being exploited at meaningful scale.
For Moonshot to now be seeking additional Blackwell access for an even larger model, Kimi K4, while the K3 allegations remain unresolved, signals the company either expects the controversy to blow over without material consequence, or judges that continued execution speed is worth the geopolitical risk. Either read reinforces the pattern this year of Chinese open-weight labs prioritizing rapid, aggressive model releases over caution around compliance optics.
