Fish Audio, an AI voice startup that started as a single-GPU weekend project, announced a $52 million seed round Tuesday led by Coreline Ventures and Capital Today, with participation from 359 Capital, Play Time, HF0, 645 Ventures, Parable, Carya Venture Partners and Alphalist Partners.
The company's origin story is unusually grassroots for a round this size. Founder Shijia Liao, a former Nvidia researcher, trained an early voice-generation model on a single GPU in his bedroom and open-sourced it, building an initial community of developers before formalizing the company. That open-source foundation has translated into real traction: since launching just over a year ago, more than 8 million people have used Fish Audio's open-source or hosted models, and the company now generates $21 million in annual recurring revenue.

The round is part of a broader pattern in 2026 seed-stage AI investing: rather than back general-purpose foundation model labs, which require enormous compute budgets to compete with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, investors increasingly favor narrower vertical plays -- voice, coding, video -- where a smaller team can build genuinely differentiated product experience on top of openly available research.
