Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with US lawmakers in Washington on July 28 to make the case that open-weight AI models are essential infrastructure for safe and secure AI adoption across the broader economy, rather than a security risk to be regulated away. The meeting is part of a broader lobbying push by Huang, who has increasingly positioned himself as the industry's most visible advocate for keeping powerful AI models openly available rather than locked behind a handful of closed-model labs.
Huang's argument, echoed in a separate Bloomberg interview days earlier, is a supply-side one as much as a policy one: he's forecast that the semiconductor industry needs to expand roughly tenfold over the next decade to serve a computing world where autonomous machines, not humans, are the dominant users of compute. Open-weight models, in Huang's framing, broaden the base of companies and researchers who can build on frontier-level AI, which in turn broadens demand for the chips Nvidia sells -- a policy position that's also very good business.
The timing is delicate. Chinese labs, most visibly Moonshot AI with its 2.8-trillion-parameter Kimi K3 model, have been closing the gap with US open-weight offerings, which puts Huang in the position of defending open access broadly even as Washington debates tightening technology-transfer restrictions specifically aimed at Chinese AI development. Huang has to thread a message that supports open-weight AI globally while not undermining the export-control regime his own company depends on for predictable China-market access.
For founders building on open-weight models, Huang's advocacy matters less as policy forecasting and more as a signal of where the most influential player in AI infrastructure is placing his political capital.
