China now has four companies racing to remove the safety driver at the same time, which is either a sign the underlying tech has genuinely crossed a reliability threshold or a sign everyone's terrified of being the one still running safety drivers when a competitor isn't. CaoCao's remote-safety-platform architecture is the more interesting story than the fleet size -- that's the actual moat in robotaxis, not the cars themselves. Founders in autonomy should be studying the oversight stack, not the vehicle count.

Analysis

CaoCao Mobility, the ride-hailing arm of Chinese automaker Geely, announced the official launch of robotaxi testing without a safety driver behind the wheel on public roads in Hangzhou's Binjiang District, under real-world urban traffic conditions.

The rollout uses a station-triggered dispatch mechanism rather than open hailing, deliberately limiting where and how the driverless vehicles operate while CaoCao validates operational stability and service reliability at a controlled scale.
