Vehicles And Direct Competition
Waymo will deploy electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in Singapore, putting the company in direct competition with Chinese robotaxi operators WeRide and Pony AI, both of which have been expanding more aggressively outside China than Waymo has expanded outside the US to date. Initial service will target western Singapore, starting with the Labrador and Harbourfront areas, before any broader citywide rollout.

The Competitive Backdrop
Waymo's domestic business continues expanding -- the company has also been restarting service in markets like San Antonio and steadily growing its Phoenix and San Francisco footprints. Rival Zoox, Amazon-owned, is separately about to see its own regulatory cap disappear in Nevada, part of a broader pattern of the entire robotaxi category moving from pilot constraints toward fuller commercial scale simultaneously across multiple operators and markets.
Two Years Of Monsoon Training
A 2028 commercial target gives Waymo roughly two years to prove the technology works reliably in monsoon conditions before any revenue materializes -- a longer runway than a domestic market launch typically requires, reflecting genuine technical uncertainty rather than just cautious pacing.
