Apple unveiled a $299 Apple TV 4K and a $149 HomePod mini at an October 13 "Welcome Home" event, both built around hands-free Siri AI and marking the first major Apple TV refresh since 2022, TechCrunch reported.
The new Apple TV 4K runs an upgraded A19 chip and adds three far-field microphones so users can talk to Siri without a remote or a paired HomePod -- previously, Siri on Apple TV required a physical remote press. Bloomberg has reported Apple originally wanted this device out in 2024, but delays building an AI-capable version of Siri pushed the launch back nearly two years, the same Siri overhaul that has also dogged Apple's iPhone roadmap.
A late answer to Alexa and Nest
Google and Amazon have offered AI-driven content suggestions on their streaming hardware for longer, and Apple's new Siri integration -- which can answer contextual questions like "Where was this show filmed?" -- is Apple's most direct answer yet. The HomePod mini refresh, TechCrunch reported separately, carries an S10 chip, adds multi-turn Siri conversations via a future software update, and listens for sounds like smoke alarms to alert a user's phone. At $149, it costs $50 more than the original 2020 HomePod mini, a price increase Apple is betting AI features and acoustic upgrades justify.
Apple also showed off a new smart-home hub called HomeView at the same event. Pre-event reporting from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman put its price near $350, though Apple itself has not confirmed a price or exact ship date for that device. The Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini are both available for preorder now and ship October 30.
The launch puts Apple back in a smart-speaker and streaming-box market it has mostly ceded to Amazon's Echo and Fire TV lines and Google's Nest and Chromecast hardware over the past several years. Apple has sold hundreds of millions of HomePod and Apple TV units since each product's debut, but neither has come close to Echo's share of the smart-speaker market; this refresh is Apple's bet that bundling Siri AI across a multi-speaker home system can win back usage from Alexa and Google Assistant households.
What the launch doesn't resolve: Siri's AI overhaul has repeatedly slipped at Apple, and HomeView's absence of a confirmed price or ecosystem suggests Apple is still finalizing the bigger piece of its smart-home push. However, shipping the TV and speaker now, even without HomeView ready, gives Apple a live AI-hardware testbed ahead of whatever comes next.
Pulse has tracked Apple's AI rollout closely, including its recent fight with OpenAI over hiring and trade secrets -- a reminder that Apple's AI ambitions now span litigation as well as hardware. Watch for HomeView's actual price when it ships in mid-November, and whether Apple opens Siri's new conversational layer to third-party smart-home devices beyond its own ecosystem.
