Mistral AI is the more valuable company: its €3 billion Series D set a post-money valuation above €21 billion, about $24.4 billion, TechCrunch reported on September 8, 2026. Cohere's pending merger with Aleph Alpha values the combined company at $20 billion, and Mistral also discloses more revenue.
Both are model makers based outside the U.S., and both sell the same pitch: capable models that governments and regulated companies can run under their own control. They differ in how they get there. Mistral sells open-weight models, a public API with list prices, and a consumer chat app. Cohere sells privately deployed enterprise systems through its sales team and is adding scale by merging with a German peer. The comparison below uses the latest sourced figure for each, as of October 2026.

Which Is Worth More, Cohere or Mistral?
Mistral, by about $4 billion on a dollar basis, and its number is a closed, priced round. Its Series D was led by Samsung Electronics, the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT and existing investor PSG Equity, with Andreessen Horowitz, Nvidia and Salesforce Ventures returning and Advent, BlackRock and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg joining, per TechCrunch, which described it as the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company. Cohere's $20 billion is a different kind of figure: the value TechCrunch reported for the company formed by merging with Aleph Alpha, a deal signed in definitive form on September 16 that had not closed as of mid-October 2026.
How Much Have Cohere and Mistral Raised?
Mistral has raised faster and at higher prices from the start. Its June 2023 seed of $113 million valued it at $260 million; a €385 million Series A in December 2023 set a $2 billion valuation; a €600 million Series B in June 2024, mixing equity and debt, reached $6 billion; and a €1.7 billion Series C in September 2025 valued it at €11.7 billion, according to TechCrunch's company history. Before the Series D, PitchBook data put its total raised at roughly $4 billion, Fortune reported. The €3 billion Series D roughly doubled that.
Cohere's path has been slower and more tied to governments. It was valued at roughly $7 billion in September 2025. In April 2026 Schwarz Group, a German conglomerate that was one of Aleph Alpha's main backers, agreed to invest $600 million in Cohere's Series E as part of the merger. By September 2026 Cohere was in advanced talks to raise $2-3 billion, with the Canadian and German governments participating and private investors expected to provide most of the money, per The Globe and Mail. As of mid-October 2026, no closing of that raise had been announced.
How Much Revenue Do Cohere and Mistral Make?
Mistral's annualized revenue run rate exceeded $400 million in 2025, and the company was on track to pass $1 billion by the end of 2026, Fortune reported in August 2026, citing more than 100 large enterprise customers. Cohere hit an annualized revenue rate of $240 million in 2025, according to The Globe and Mail. Neither has published a 2026 figure.
Value Add VC's arithmetic on those numbers: Mistral's valuation is about 61x its 2025 run rate and Cohere's about 83x. The Cohere multiple overstates the gap, because the $20 billion includes Aleph Alpha, whose revenue is not in the $240 million. Both multiples are far above the 2.7x paid for mature software companies in 2026, which tells you investors are pricing future model revenue rather than today's.
How Do Cohere and Mistral Price Their Models?
This is the clearest product difference. Mistral's pricing page lists Mistral Large at $0.50 per million input tokens and $1.50 per million output tokens, cuts batch prices by 50%, and sells Le Chat Pro at $14.99 a month and Team at $24.99 per user per month. Cohere's pricing page lists per-token prices only for older Command models, such as $0.50 and $1.50 for Command R (03-2024) and $2.50 and $10 for Command R+ (08-2024), and asks buyers of newer models and its North agent platform to contact sales. It also prices dedicated "Model Vault" deployments by the hour or month, from $2,000 a month for Embed.

Mistral and Cohere pricing pages, October 2026
The comparison is not like for like: Command R+ (08-2024) is an older Cohere model, and Cohere's current models are priced by negotiation. Mistral wins on transparent, self-serve pricing; Cohere's list prices say little about what an enterprise contract costs.
Where Each Company Has the Edge
Mistral wins on capital and reach. It has raised at a higher price, with chipmakers Samsung and Nvidia on the cap table, and it plans to build 1 GW of compute capacity in Europe by 2030, per TechCrunch. It also sells to consumers and small teams through Le Chat, which gives it a self-serve revenue line Cohere does not have.
Cohere wins on enterprise packaging and government backing. Its business is built around private deployments, retrieval models and agents for regulated customers, and its backers include Canada's PSP Investments and Business Development Bank of Canada; the raise it was negotiating in September 2026 included financing from the Canadian government, with the German government also participating, per The Globe and Mail. The Aleph Alpha merger gives it a German base, a research center in Heidelberg and more than 1,000 combined staff, per Cohere. On October 15, 2026 Cohere also signed a letter of intent to buy AI cybersecurity startup AISLE, terms undisclosed, Reuters reported.
What the headline misses
Both companies are small next to U.S. labs, and both valuations rest on revenue the companies report themselves. Mistral's $1 billion target is a goal for the end of 2026, not a result. Cohere's $20 billion depends on a merger that still needs regulatory approval, and a valuation built by combining two companies is harder to compare with a cash round. The euro-dollar conversion also moves Mistral's dollar figure; we use TechCrunch's conversion at the time of the round.
Cohere or Mistral: Which Should You Pick?
- Developers and startups buying by the token: Mistral, for published prices, batch discounts and open-weight models you can self-host.
- Teams that want a chat assistant this week: Mistral, since Le Chat Team is self-serve at $24.99 per user per month.
- Banks, insurers and public agencies needing a private deployment with search and retrieval: Cohere, whose Embed, Rerank and North products are sold as managed private deployments.
- Canadian or German public-sector buyers: Cohere, given its government backing in both countries.
- Investors comparing the two as assets: Mistral is the larger, faster-growing company on disclosed numbers; Cohere is the cheaper entry if the merger closes and the combined revenue grows into $20 billion.
