THE RUNDOWN

1

Targets an enormous addressable market: Mastercard estimates $125 trillion a year moves through B2B payments, much of it delayed by disputes.

2

Base10 and new backers QED and FJ Labs joined existing investors Creandum, Kfund and Borusan, a sign of conviction beyond the founding syndicate.

3

Founder Maex Ament previously built supply-chain finance company Taulia, giving him direct domain experience in this exact problem.

4

Agent-to-agent billing negotiation is a genuinely new AI use case beyond chat copilots, worth watching as a category.

Ament already built and sold Taulia, a supply-chain-finance company, so this isn't a founder guessing at the billing-disputes problem -- it's a repeat founder applying agentic AI to something he's already monetized with rules-based software. The real diligence question: does an AI agent negotiating early payment actually change supplier behavior, or does it just automate what Taulia and C2FO already do manually? Watch whether Causa Prima's take rate holds once suppliers start gaming the negotiation.

Analysis

Causa Prima raised a $20 million seed round, led by Base10 Partners, for an AI agent platform that resolves billing disputes between companies and their suppliers and speeds up early payments, according to Fortune. The round closed in September 2026.

The raise brings Causa Prima's total funding to $30 million, following a $10 million pre-seed round. New investors QED Investors and FJ Labs joined, alongside existing backers Creandum, Kfund and Borusan Ventures. Causa Prima's platform uses AI agents on both sides of a transaction -- buyer and supplier -- to negotiate disputed invoices and early-payment terms automatically, earning a cut when its agents successfully speed up payment.

The company was founded in early 2026 by Maex Ament, Henrik Gebbing and CTO Philip Stanislaus, and is based in Delaware with 25 employees split between Madrid and Munich; it plans to open a New York office next. Ament previously founded Taulia, a supply-chain-finance and e-invoicing company, and Centrifuge, a DeFi platform for tokenizing real-world assets. Gebbing co-founded fintech Finoa after three years at McKinsey, and Stanislaus led engineering under Ament at Centrifuge.

“The raise brings Causa Prima's total funding to $30 million, following a $10 million pre-seed round.”

Causa Prima is entering a market with established competition: Taulia (now part of SAP), C2FO and Tradeshift all already offer dynamic discounting or invoice-financing tools that solve a version of the same late-payment problem, typically through rules-based workflows rather than negotiating agents. Fortune Business Insights estimates roughly $98 trillion in annual B2B payments globally, and Mastercard puts the opportunity at $125 trillion; a 2025 Ardent Partners report found invoice processing takes more than eight days on average, which is the delay Causa Prima's agents are meant to compress.

The round is modest next to Ament's prior exit -- Taulia sold to SAP after building a much larger customer base over a decade -- but it starts Causa Prima with a repeat founder's credibility in a category still dominated by non-AI incumbents, the kind of agentic-AI-meets-unglamorous-industry seed Pulse has tracked all year in its VC fundraises hub.

Watch whether Causa Prima discloses customer or transaction-volume numbers at its next round, since none were shared here, and whether incumbents like Taulia or C2FO respond by adding their own agentic negotiation layer.
