Ant International, Visa and Mastercard announced a shared Know-Your-Agent (KYA) interoperability framework on September 10, CNBC reported, aligning three previously separate, competing protocols so an AI agent that shops on a user's behalf can be verified once and recognized across card networks, wallets and marketplaces rather than repeating identity checks with every participating provider.
Three rivals' protocols, now aligned
Each company already runs its own agent-identity system: Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, Mastercard's Verifiable Intent, and Ant International's Agentic Mobile Protocol, per TechNode Global's coverage. Under the shared KYA framework, each network keeps its own verification and decision-making process, but an agent registered with one participating provider won't need to repeat that process with another -- the framework targets cross-network operator traceability, shared certification requirements and continuous transaction monitoring rather than replacing any single company's existing protocol outright.

The market the deal is chasing
The companies cited McKinsey projections that AI agents will handle $3 trillion to $5 trillion of global consumer commerce by 2030 -- a number large enough to explain why three direct competitors agreed to interoperate rather than each try to lock merchants and consumers into a single proprietary standard. Why interoperability won over lock-in
That the three companies chose alignment instead is itself the interesting signal: card networks have historically preferred proprietary standards precisely because of the lock-in value, and Visa and Mastercard in particular compete directly for the same merchant and issuer relationships. Agreeing to a shared identity layer suggests all three concluded that a fragmented, incompatible set of agent-identity systems would slow adoption of agentic commerce broadly -- a bigger threat to each company's long-term volume than losing a proprietary edge to a rival.
A framework announcement is not the same as a working, adopted standard. None of the three companies have disclosed a timeline for when merchants or wallets will actually be able to rely on cross-network KYA verification in production, and "now comes the hard part" -- getting competing card networks, wallet providers and agent platforms to actually implement shared certification requirements at scale -- is likely to take considerably longer than the announcement itself, as Forkast News noted in its own coverage of the deal.
What to watch: which wallet providers and agentic-commerce startups adopt the KYA framework first, and whether Google, Apple or PayPal -- all building their own agentic-payment capabilities -- join the alignment or continue building proprietary alternatives.
