Recursive Superintelligence, the AI research lab pursuing open-ended self-improving systems, announced a multi-year compute deal with Amazon Web Services worth $410 million Tuesday -- a sum that represents the bulk of the roughly $650 million the company has raised since emerging from stealth in May.
CEO and co-founder Richard Socher framed the deal as just the beginning: "Partnering with AWS gives us the infrastructure to run self-improving AI research at a scale very few teams in the world are capable of," he said, adding that the current deal is "likely going to be one of the smallest compute deals we're going to sign in the next few years." That's a striking admission for a company barely three months removed from stealth -- it signals Recursive expects its compute appetite to scale even faster than its funding has.
The company's founding team reads like an assembled all-star roster of AI research talent: Socher previously led AI at Salesforce, while co-founders Tim Rocktaschel, Jeff Clune, Josh Tobin and Tim Shi bring backgrounds spanning DeepMind, OpenAI and academic AI safety research. Recursive raised $650 million at a $4.65 billion valuation in May, with Nvidia and GV among its backers -- giving it both capital and a direct hardware relationship even before this AWS deal.
Self-improving AI, the research direction Recursive is built around, is inherently more compute-intensive than standard large-model training because it involves systems that iteratively modify and retrain themselves, often running many parallel experiments rather than a single large training run. That appetite is exactly what's driving hyperscalers like Amazon to strike direct infrastructure deals with well-funded research labs rather than waiting for demand to arrive through standard cloud sales channels.
