Either way, Amazon striking direct infrastructure deals with individual research labs -- rather than waiting for demand through standard cloud sales -- shows how much hyperscaler competition for frontier-lab customers has intensified this year.

Recursive Superintelligence, the AI research lab pursuing open-ended self-improving systems, announced a multi-year compute deal with Amazon Web Services worth $410 million Tuesday -- a sum that represents the bulk of the roughly $650 million the company has raised since emerging from stealth in May.

CEO and co-founder Richard Socher framed the deal as just the beginning: "Partnering with AWS gives us the infrastructure to run self-improving AI research at a scale very few teams in the world are capable of," he said, adding that the current deal is "likely going to be one of the smallest compute deals we're going to sign in the next few years." That's a striking admission for a company barely three months removed from stealth -- it signals Recursive expects its compute appetite to scale even faster than its funding has.
