Paper, a San Francisco startup building an AI-native design platform, raised a $34 million Series A led by Accel and ICONIQ, the company announced July 23. Designer Fund also participated, alongside a notably specific angel roster: WorkOS co-founder Michael Grinich, Lovable co-founder Anton Osika, and individual engineers and designers from both Anthropic and OpenAI.
Founder and CEO Stephen Haney built Paper around a specific bet: as more software gets built with the help of AI coding agents, the traditional design handoff -- a human designer producing static mockups for human engineers to implement one at a time -- breaks down. The company's early customer list is unusually strong for a Series A-stage design tool: Ramp, Lovable, Vercel, PostHog, Quartr and Y Combinator are all already using Paper, giving it real validation from companies that are themselves building fast, AI-forward engineering organizations.
The dual-lab angel roster -- engineers and designers from both Anthropic and OpenAI writing personal checks -- is a meaningful signal distinct from the institutional round itself: people building frontier coding-agent capability directly are betting the design layer around those agents is a genuinely open, valuable problem rather than something the labs themselves will simply absorb into their own products.
For design-tooling and developer-tools investors, Paper's bet sits at the intersection of two categories that have each drawn heavy capital independently -- AI coding agents and next-generation design tools -- without much overlap between them so far. The risk is platform risk: if Figma, Framer or the coding-agent platforms themselves build comparable agent-native design capability directly, Paper's differentiation narrows quickly.
