Consumer health is the least defensible, most regulated place to plant a flag, and OpenAI just did it anyway with a straight face about not training on your data. If that promise holds, it's a real wedge against Apple and Google on trust; if it doesn't, it's the fastest way to blow up consumer confidence in ChatGPT. Founders in digital health should be watching the reaction, not the feature.

Analysis

OpenAI began rolling out Health in ChatGPT to all adult users in the United States on July 23, a dedicated feature that securely connects ChatGPT to Apple Health data and, for the first time at this scale, electronic medical records. The feature is available to logged-in users 18 and older across all of OpenAI's subscription tiers -- Free, Go, Plus, and Pro -- on web and iOS, though it has not yet reached Android.

Once connected, ChatGPT can compare new lab results with prior tests, summarize what's changed since a user's last doctor's appointment, and explore relationships between sleep, activity, and workout data. Supported wellness integrations include Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, Peloton, AllTrails, Instacart, and Function. OpenAI says connected medical records, Apple Health information, and conversations that draw on them are not used to train its foundation models or to target advertising -- a direct answer to the trust concerns that have dogged AI health products.

The medical-records integration is limited to the U.S. for now, while broader ChatGPT Health functionality is unavailable in the European Union, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, reflecting tighter health-data regulation there. The move puts OpenAI in more direct competition with Apple's own health ecosystem and Google's health AI efforts, betting that hundreds of millions of existing ChatGPT users will trust a single assistant to sit on top of their medical data.

Watch adoption numbers, whether any data-handling missteps surface, and if OpenAI expands the feature to the EU and UK once compliance work is done.
