Meta is shipping a software update that stops its AI-powered smart glasses from recording if a wearer covers the capture indicator light mid-video, closing a bypass that had let people film without any visible signal to the person in frame, multiple outlets reported. Alex Himel, Meta's VP of AR, said the camera "will now stop working if the light is covered during a recording" -- previously, starting a recording and then obscuring the LED with a finger or piece of tape let the capture continue undetected.
The company is pairing the technical fix with a public education push explaining what the LED means and when it indicates active recording, an acknowledgment that most bystanders don't reliably notice or understand the indicator even when it's working as designed. This is the second software update Meta has issued in under two months specifically to address unwanted or covert recording concerns with its Ray-Ban and Oakley AI glasses lines.

Smart glasses face a structural privacy problem that a single patch doesn't solve: the entire product category is designed to look and feel like ordinary eyewear, which is the point for wearers and the objection for everyone else. A visible LED is the industry's standard mitigation -- Meta, Snap and others all use some version of it -- but an indicator only works if it can't be defeated and if bystanders actually recognize it, and this loophole failed on the first count while the education campaign is an admission Meta is still working on the second. The regulatory angle is not hypothetical. Several states have wiretapping and eavesdropping statutes that require consent from all parties to a recording, and a device that can be made to record without any visible indicator creates real legal exposure for the wearer, not just a product-trust problem for Meta. Illinois' biometric privacy law has already produced large settlements against tech companies for far less deliberate data practices than a recording bypass.
The counterweight
Closing this particular loophole doesn't close the underlying gap: a sufficiently motivated user can likely find another workaround, and Meta's own admission that this is its second fix in two months suggests the company is patching discovered exploits rather than designing the system to be un-bypassable from the start. The company has also not disclosed how many devices were used to record video with the light covered before this fix shipped, which limits how much confidence anyone can place in "problem solved" framing.
The next test is whether Meta's next hardware generation builds tamper-resistance into the camera module itself -- a hardware fix that can't be patched around -- rather than relying on software updates that follow each new discovered bypass.
