Quick Answer

South Florida has six private unicorns in 2026, led by OpenEvidence, the Miami-based medical AI company valued at $12 billion after its January 2026 Series D. Miami-based Kaseya was pegged at roughly $12 billion at its 2022 Datto acquisition and is prepping an IPO. The rest: Yuga Labs ($4B, a stale 2022 mark), eMed ($2B+, March 2026), Pipe ($2B, May 2026), and Magic Leap (majority-owned by Saudi Arabia's PIF, last known mark around $2B). Hydra Host (~$800M) leads the watchlist of likely next unicorns.

Miami spent five years talking about becoming a real tech hub. In 2026 the scoreboard finally has numbers on it: six private, billion-dollar companies headquartered in South Florida β€” led by a $12 billion medical AI company that moved here on purpose.

Most "Miami unicorn" lists you'll find are padded with public companies, hedge funds, and startups that merely opened a satellite office near the beach. This one isn't. Every company below is private, headquartered in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach County, and carries a $1B+ valuation with a named source and a date β€” and when the mark is stale, I say so, because a 2022 NFT-peak valuation is not the same thing as a January 2026 priced round. Cross-reference every round against our South Florida funding tracker, which logs the region's verified deals as they happen.

South Florida's Unicorns, Ranked by Valuation

1
OpenEvidence β€” $12B (January 2026)
The Miami-based medical AI platform β€” the 'ChatGPT for doctors' β€” closed a $250M Series D in January 2026 co-led by Thrive Capital and DST Global at a $12 billion valuation, double its mark from just months earlier and roughly 12x its valuation from a year before. Sequoia, Kleiner Perkins, Blackstone, Nvidia, and the Mayo Clinic are all on the cap table, total funding is near $700M, and the company says about 40% of U.S. physicians use the product to guide clinical decisions. It relocated its HQ to Miami in 2025 β€” the single biggest validation the ecosystem has landed since the 2021 wave.
Why it ranks here: The freshest, largest, and least-disputable mark on this list β€” a January 2026 priced round led by two of the most valuation-disciplined growth firms in venture
2
Kaseya β€” ~$12B (2022 mark; IPO in prep)
Miami's quiet giant. The IT-management and security software company was valued at about $12 billion at the time of its $6.2B Datto acquisition in 2022, per a company spokesperson β€” and hasn't priced a round since, so treat the figure as four years old. What's current: ARR above $1.5B post-Datto with a $2B target, 5,000+ employees, a $16M commitment to expand its Miami HQ, and new CEO Rania Succar openly positioning the Insight Partners-backed company for an IPO at its Connect 2026 conference. If it lists, it would be the largest public-market debut ever for a Miami-headquartered software company.
Why it ranks here: The biggest real business on this list by revenue β€” just don't quote the $12B as a current market price, because no one has priced it since 2022
3
Yuga Labs β€” $4B (March 2022 mark; deeply stale)
The Coral Gables-based creator of Bored Ape Yacht Club last raised at $4 billion in March 2022 β€” the exact top of the NFT market β€” and every honest observer knows the business is worth a fraction of that today. NFT floor prices collapsed, the company cycled through restructurings and layoffs (CEO Greg Solano told staff Yuga had 'lost its way'), and headcount fell to roughly 113 by mid-2026. It stays on this list because the $4B mark was never repriced down in a new round β€” which is exactly why stale marks deserve a warning label, not a ranking boost.
Why it ranks here: A case study in why 'last raised at' is not 'worth' β€” the largest gap between paper mark and probable reality in South Florida
4
eMed β€” $2B+ (March 2026)
The Miami-based digital health company raised $200M in March 2026 at a valuation above $2 billion, in a round led by Aon β€” with Tom Brady among its backers. eMed pivoted hard from its pandemic-era at-home testing business into GLP-1 management for employers and government payers, riding a weight-loss drug market expected to reach $150B in annual sales. A fresh 2026 priced round in one of healthcare's hottest categories makes this one of the region's most credible marks.
Why it ranks here: The region's second-freshest mark β€” a 2026 round priced by a strategic (Aon) that is also its distribution partner
5
Pipe β€” $2B (May 2026; HQ caveat)
The fintech that turned recurring revenue into a tradeable asset β€” and has since expanded into embedded capital for small businesses β€” reached a $2 billion valuation in May 2026, per Florida Trend, which describes the company as Miami-based. Honest caveat: Pipe runs a distributed model, co-founder Harry Hurst relocated to Miami and opened the company's first 'microhub' in Wynwood, but some databases still list its HQ in California. We include it here per the Florida Trend characterization; if you want to be strict about HQ purity, mentally asterisk this entry.
Why it ranks here: A fresh 2026 mark and a real Miami center of gravity β€” with the messiest HQ situation on the list, flagged accordingly
6
Magic Leap β€” ~$2B last known (PIF-owned)
Plantation's AR pioneer is the list's most complicated entry. It raised over $3.4 billion from Google, Alibaba, Temasek, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, touched a $6B+ valuation in the 2019 hype cycle, then failed as a consumer product and pivoted to enterprise. PIF took majority control in late 2022, and PitchBook/Tracxn peg the last known valuation around $2 billion. Today it employs roughly 1,200 people and its most important asset may be its optics manufacturing β€” the basis of a strategic partnership with Google announced in 2024. Still private, still $1B+, still headquartered in Broward County β€” but nobody's model of a venture-scale outcome anymore.
Why it ranks here: Technically a unicorn, honestly a controlled subsidiary of a sovereign wealth fund β€” included because the definition says private and $1B+, not because the story is pretty

All valuations are last priced or reported marks, not current trading prices β€” private secondaries may clear materially lower.

Greater Florida: Two More Unicorns Outside the Tri-County Area

Widen the lens to the whole state and two more names join. ThreatLocker, the Orlando-based zero-trust security company, raised a $190M Series F in July 2026 led by Elephant β€” with private-market data from Forge pegging the post-money around $1.78 billion, up from $1.6B in its prior round. And Cirkul, the Tampa flavored-water brand sold in 4,200+ Walmart stores, hit a $1 billion valuation with its 2022 raise β€” a mark that, like Yuga's, hasn't been repriced since. Neither is South Florida, which is why they sit in this section and not the ranking.

The Watchlist: South Florida's Next Likely Unicorns

The most interesting name in the pipeline is Hydra Host, the Miami-based GPU infrastructure marketplace. Its $100M Series A β€” led by Kindred Ventures with Nvidia, ARK Invest, Founders Fund, Magnetar, and Comcast Ventures participating β€” valued the company at approximately $800 million. Its Brokkr software now runs across roughly 50 data centers and a fleet of 15,000+ GPUs, up from about 30 sites a year earlier. At current AI-infrastructure multiples, the next round almost certainly clears $1B.

Beyond Hydra Host, the honest answer is that the region's pipeline is broader than it is deep: South Florida raised $4B+ in venture funding over the past year across hundreds of deals, but most of the volume is seed and Series A. The names to watch are whichever of those break out β€” follow the rounds as they're verified on the funding tracker, and the investors writing the checks on our Miami VC firms directory.

How We Ranked These

Inclusion requires three things: a private company (no public companies, no hedge funds), a headquarters in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach County, and a $1B+ valuation traceable to a named source. Ranking is by last priced or reported valuation (roughly 80% of the ordering), with mark freshness as the tiebreaker (20%) β€” which is why OpenEvidence's January 2026 round outranks Kaseya's equal-but-older figure. Primary sources include CNBC's reporting on the OpenEvidence Series D, Florida Trend on Pipe, Reuters on eMed, and PitchBook/Tracxn profiles for companies without recent rounds β€” all checked as of August 2026. We deliberately publish the as-of date next to every number: a valuation without a date is marketing, not data.

Six unicorns, roughly $34B in combined paper value β€” but only three of those marks were priced in 2026.

South Florida's unicorn story is real now. The next test is whether the watchlist graduates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many unicorns does South Florida have in 2026?

Six private companies headquartered in the Miami-Dade / Broward / Palm Beach tri-county area carry billion-dollar-plus valuations in 2026: OpenEvidence ($12B), Kaseya (~$12B at its last disclosed mark in 2022), Yuga Labs ($4B, also a 2022 mark), eMed ($2B+, March 2026), Pipe ($2B, May 2026), and Magic Leap (last known valuation around $2B, majority-owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund). Counting greater Florida adds ThreatLocker in Orlando (~$1.8B, July 2026) and Cirkul in Tampa ($1B, 2022).

What is the most valuable startup in Miami?

OpenEvidence, the medical AI platform often called the ChatGPT for doctors, is Miami's most valuable startup at $12 billion following a $250 million Series D in January 2026 co-led by Thrive Capital and DST Global. The company, which relocated its headquarters to Miami in 2025, says its platform is used by roughly 40% of U.S. physicians. Kaseya carries a comparable ~$12 billion figure, but that mark dates to its 2022 Datto acquisition rather than a recent round.

Is Magic Leap still a unicorn in 2026?

Technically yes, but with major caveats. The Plantation-based AR company raised over $3.4 billion and was once valued at more than $6 billion, but after its consumer flop it pivoted to enterprise, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund took majority control in late 2022. PitchBook and Tracxn list its last known valuation around $2 billion. It now operates largely as an optics and components partner β€” including a strategic partnership with Google announced in 2024 β€” rather than a headset startup chasing a big exit.

Is Yuga Labs still worth $4 billion?

Almost certainly not, and no one should quote that number without the date attached. Yuga Labs β€” the Coral Gables-based creator of Bored Ape Yacht Club β€” last raised at a $4 billion valuation in March 2022, at the absolute peak of the NFT market. Since then NFT floor prices collapsed, the company went through multiple layoff rounds (its CEO said Yuga had 'lost its way'), and headcount shrank to roughly 113 by mid-2026. The $4B figure is the last priced mark, which is why it stays on the list β€” but treat it as a historical artifact, not a current price.

Which South Florida startups are closest to becoming unicorns?

Hydra Host is the clearest candidate: the Miami-based GPU infrastructure marketplace raised a $100 million Series A at a valuation approaching $800 million, led by Kindred Ventures with participation from Nvidia, ARK Invest, and Founders Fund. Its Brokkr software now runs across roughly 50 data centers and 15,000+ GPUs. A single strong follow-on round at current AI-infrastructure multiples would push it past $1 billion. Track new rounds as they land on our South Florida funding tracker.

Does Citadel or Chewy count as a South Florida unicorn?

No β€” 'unicorn' specifically means a private, venture-backed startup valued at $1 billion or more. Citadel is a hedge fund and market maker (now Miami-headquartered, but not a venture-backed startup), and Chewy is a public company traded on the NYSE. Palantir's 2026 headquarters move to Miami doesn't count either, for the same reason. The list here is limited to private startups with a South Florida HQ and a sourced $1B+ valuation.
