Moonshot AI is targeting a Hong Kong IPO in the first quarter of 2027 that could raise up to $5 billion, after a private round valued the Kimi maker at $50 billion. No listing date has been confirmed.
The target comes from reporting on October 6, 2026 that cited Bloomberg and said the timing "could still change." Moonshot filed confidentially with the Hong Kong exchange a month earlier. If it lists on schedule, it would follow Chinese AI labs MiniMax and Z.ai, which listed in Hong Kong in January 2026, and rank among the larger listings on our list of expected 2027 IPOs.

Has Moonshot AI filed for its IPO?
Yes, confidentially. Moonshot filed with the Hong Kong exchange on about September 3, 2026, aiming to raise about $3 billion, with Goldman Sachs, CICC and Deutsche Bank among the banks working on it, Reuters reported, as summarized by Startup Fortune. A confidential filing means no prospectus is public, so revenue, losses and share terms are known only from press reports until the company publishes one.
To qualify, Moonshot "redomiciled in mainland China and converted its operating entity into a joint stock company," the same report said, a restructuring Beijing requires of AI companies that want public-market access. Reporting from July had said it was working to unwind its offshore structure by August.
How much is Moonshot AI worth?
Moonshot AI was valued at $50 billion in its latest private round, up from $31.5 billion in a round this summer, per the October 6 report. In July, Yahoo Finance reported that Moonshot was closing the $31.5 billion round after a May 2026 round led by Meituan above $20 billion, and named Meituan, Tencent, IDG Capital, China Mobile and the Beijing AI Industry Investment Fund as existing backers. By Value Add VC's arithmetic, that is a 2.5x increase in valuation in about five months.
The founder, Yang Zhilin, is 33 and worked at Meta and Google before starting Moonshot in 2023, the July report said. Our earlier Moonshot valuation analysis looks at what the revenue multiple implied before the latest round.
What revenue will Moonshot AI bring to the IPO?
Moonshot reached $300 million in annual recurring revenue in June 2026, up from $200 million in April, and daily revenue rose at least sixfold after the Kimi K3 launch, the July Yahoo Finance report said. In September, Moonshot was targeting $2 billion in annualized revenue by the end of 2026, which TechCrunch reported on September 11, 2026 would double its August run rate.
Kimi K3, the model behind that growth, is a mixture-of-experts model with 2.8 trillion total parameters, 104 billion of them active per token, and a 1-million-token context window, and its weights were released on July 27, 2026, according to Unite.AI. Moonshot's hosted API charges $3.00 per million input tokens and $15.00 per million output tokens, and its license requires a separate agreement once a commercial inference provider passes $20 million of revenue over 12 months.
One read on this: an open-weight model lets anyone run Kimi K3 without paying Moonshot, which TechCrunch noted means "far lower margins than its closed-weight competitors." IPO investors will want to see how much revenue the license tiers and hosted API actually capture.
What could delay the Moonshot AI IPO?
A $700 million shareholder claim
Former investors in Recurrent.ai, the startup Yang Zhilin founded in 2016, say he and a co-founder never obtained the board waivers their non-compete agreements required when they launched Moonshot in 2023, and their claims "could amount to more than $700 million," Reuters reported on October 11, 2026, as summarized by Startup Fortune. The investors include GSR Ventures, Boyu Capital, Jingya Capital, Huashan Capital and Wanyu Capital, a Hong Kong arbitration tribunal was formed in 2025, and Moonshot executives are in talks to settle before the listing.
US accusations over Kimi K3
On July 22, 2026, White House science adviser Michael Kratsios accused Moonshot of "conducting large-scale distillation against U.S. models," including Anthropic's Fable, and of using Nvidia GB300 servers, including some in Thailand, TechCrunch reported. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said sanctions and Entity List designations "will be on the table" for covert distillation. Moonshot did not respond to TechCrunch or to CyberScoop before publication. One read on this: a Hong Kong listing does not need US approval, but an Entity List designation would likely complicate chip supply and some foreign investors' participation.
What the headline misses
The $50 billion figure is a private-round price, not an IPO valuation, and Hong Kong investors will price Moonshot against listed peers rather than against its last round. Moonshot's IPO timeline has already moved once: the Fortune report in July described a listing "within six months," which would have meant January 2027 at the latest; the October target is the first quarter of 2027, as reported on October 6, 2026.
How does Moonshot compare with other Chinese AI IPOs?
MiniMax and Z.ai both debuted in Hong Kong in early January 2026, and DeepSeek is pursuing Shanghai's STAR Market instead, with a listing possible as early as the second quarter of 2027, Fortune reported on July 23, 2026. Fortune described a split: companies seen as national champions favor mainland listings, while internet companies prefer Hong Kong.
DeepSeek is raising more than 80 billion yuan at a 500 billion yuan ($74 billion) target valuation ahead of its own listing, per Bloomberg News as carried by WNCY, which makes it the larger of the two by private valuation. MiniMax's trading since January is the nearest public comparable Hong Kong investors will have.
What to watch, and when
- October-November 2026: investor meetings. Moonshot began sounding out investors in October (MT Newswires).
- Before listing: a settlement with Recurrent.ai investors. A deal would remove the largest reported legal overhang (Startup Fortune/Reuters).
- Q1 2027: Hong Kong listing hearing and public prospectus. A published prospectus would make audited revenue figures and a price range public; as of October 15, 2026 neither is.
- Year-end 2026: the $2 billion run-rate target. Hitting it would double August's run rate (TechCrunch).
- Any time: US sanctions decisions. An Entity List designation would be the biggest external risk to the timeline (TechCrunch).
