Slack is building new features designed to bring AI coding agents out of the terminal and into group chat channels, VentureBeat reported this week -- an attempt to reframe agentic coding as a visible, collaborative team activity rather than a workflow that happens invisibly on an individual developer's machine.
The pitch: make agent activity visible to the whole team
Most AI coding agents today operate inside a developer's terminal or IDE, executing changes, running tests and iterating largely out of view of anyone besides the individual engineer driving the session. Slack's approach flips that model: bringing an agent's work into a shared channel means product managers, team leads and other engineers can watch an agent's progress in real time, ask it questions, or redirect its work without needing direct access to the underlying codebase or terminal session themselves. That's a meaningfully different collaboration model than the current default, where an agent's output typically only becomes visible to the broader team once a pull request is ready for review.
Part of a broader land-grab for where AI agents live
Slack's move fits a pattern playing out across the industry this same week: companies racing to embed AI agents directly inside the tools people already use daily, rather than competing purely on standalone AI product quality. OpenAI's new Apple Messages plugin reads, summarizes and sends texts inside an app people already have open constantly, and Meta's own desktop assistant pursues a similar embedded-everywhere strategy. Slack pursuing the same logic for coding agents specifically -- embedding them in the collaboration surface engineering teams already live in, rather than requiring a separate terminal-based tool -- follows the same competitive logic: winning the surface where people already spend their time matters more than winning on standalone capability alone.
An open question: does visibility actually help?
Watching an AI agent work inside a shared channel could genuinely improve team awareness of what's changing and why, catching problems earlier than a finished pull request would. But it also introduces a new social dynamic worth naming: an agent visibly working in a group channel creates pressure not to interrupt or redirect it the way a developer might freely restart a local terminal session, and unreviewed AI-generated code becoming more socially visible doesn't automatically mean it becomes more carefully reviewed.
The counterweight
Slack's parent company Salesforce is separately facing scrutiny over whether its flagship Agentforce AI platform is generating meaningful revenue for partners, The Register reported this same week -- a useful reminder that enterprise AI feature launches and enterprise AI revenue realization are two separate things that don't always move together. A well-designed feature that makes AI coding agents more visible to teams is a genuine product improvement if it ships and works as described, but it's not yet evidence that Slack's broader AI strategy is translating into the kind of measurable partner or customer revenue growth Agentforce has reportedly struggled to demonstrate.
