Harness, which calls itself the "Autonomous SDLC Platform" company, acquired select assets from Augment Code -- including the Cosmos software-factory agent, the Auggie CLI products and the Code Context Engine -- with Augment Code's product team joining Harness, according to a PR Newswire release dated October 8. Deal terms were not disclosed, and the release did not say what happens to the rest of Augment Code's business.
Cosmos will be rebranded as the Harness Cosmos Software Factory Agent, tasked with automating engineering work from idea to code -- extending Harness's existing platform, which already covers software delivery, security testing, runtime protection and cost management through what it calls its Agent Harness and Software Delivery Knowledge Graph. Harness, led by founder and CEO Jyoti Bansal and backed by Goldman Sachs, Menlo Ventures, IVP, Unusual Ventures and Citi Ventures, counts United Airlines, Morningstar and Choice Hotels among its customers, and claims up to 75% faster releases and 60% lower cloud costs for users of its platform.
“The lack of disclosed terms is itself a signal worth watching as more AI coding tools reach the consolidation phase of their lifecycle rather than the fundraising phase.”
The deal adds Harness to a growing list of platform consolidators absorbing AI coding tools rather than building every capability natively, a pattern also visible in GitHub's integration of Copilot features and GitLab's push into AI-assisted code review. Augment Code's exit -- being folded into a larger platform rather than continuing as an independent company -- lands in a coding-tools market where Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Cognition's Devin have all raised large rounds this year, intensifying pressure on mid-sized players without a clear differentiation or distribution advantage.
Augment Code co-founder and CTO Igor Ostrovsky called joining Harness "the next step toward that vision," while Bansal said "AI's impact on software will not be measured by how much code it generates" -- a pointed line given that code-volume metrics are exactly what rivals like GitHub Copilot and Cursor have used to market their own adoption.
What the announcement doesn't resolve is whether this was a strong outcome for Augment Code's investors or a down-round sale dressed as a strategic combination; neither the acquisition price nor Augment Code's prior valuation were disclosed, and no competitor was named in the release. The lack of disclosed terms is itself a signal worth watching as more AI coding tools reach the consolidation phase of their lifecycle rather than the fundraising phase.
