Google added its Nano Banana 2 image-generation model directly into Google Earth's web application on Thursday, letting any user zoom into a real-world location and type a prompt describing what they wanted rendered there -- a historical street scene, a redesigned vacant lot, a concept building that doesn't exist. The feature was free and required no separate app. By Friday, Google had pulled it.

The reversal came fast because the misuse case was obvious fast. Users quickly demonstrated they could superimpose fabricated visuals onto real map coordinates in ways nearly indistinguishable from Google Earth's actual satellite imagery -- generating an altered structure, or a scene that never happened, anchored to a real, identifiable location.
