Google added its Nano Banana 2 image-generation model directly into Google Earth's web application on Thursday, letting any user zoom into a real-world location and type a prompt describing what they wanted rendered there -- a historical street scene, a redesigned vacant lot, a concept building that doesn't exist. The feature was free and required no separate app. By Friday, Google had pulled it.
The reversal came fast because the misuse case was obvious fast. Users quickly demonstrated they could superimpose fabricated visuals onto real map coordinates in ways nearly indistinguishable from Google Earth's actual satellite imagery -- generating an altered structure, or a scene that never happened, anchored to a real, identifiable location. The stakes are higher for Google Earth specifically than for most consumer AI image tools. A generative tool that can produce convincing fake satellite-style imagery inside that same trusted interface threatens the evidentiary value the platform is built on -- a distinct problem from a standalone image generator, where the fabricated origin is usually clear.
This is also a notably fast reversal by Big Tech standards. Most AI safety controversies play out over weeks of public pressure before a company adjusts a feature; Google pulled Nano Banana 2 from Earth in roughly a day, suggesting internal teams recognized the provenance risk before it became a sustained news cycle -- or reacted to it faster than usual once it did.
What to watch: whether Google reintroduces a restricted version -- watermarked outputs, geographic exclusions, or a clearly separated interface -- and whether other mapping and geospatial platforms treat this as a cautionary tale before shipping similar features of their own.
