The Milestone
Google's Gemini app surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, a milestone CEO Sundar Pichai announced directly, calling it Google's fastest-growing product ever and the 14th Google product to reach a billion-user audience, according to Ars Technica and The Verge. The growth curve accelerated sharply this year: Gemini had 750 million monthly users in February, climbed to 950 million by July, and crossed a billion within weeks after that.
The ChatGPT Comparison Isn't Apples-to-Apples
OpenAI separately reports that ChatGPT reached 1 billion weekly users in July -- a different metric than Gemini's monthly figure, and one that generally implies a larger underlying user base, since a weekly-active count captures more total users than a monthly-active count typically would for a comparably sized product. Pulse previously covered OpenAI's $7 billion tender offer at an $852 billion valuation, the fundraising backdrop against which ChatGPT's own usage claims are being made. The Verge's own assessment is that ChatGPT likely remains the larger platform by raw user count, even as Gemini's growth rate outpaces it. Both companies landing near "1 billion users" in the same news cycle, using different measurement windows, makes for a compelling headline on both sides without actually settling which product has more real usage.
What's Driving Gemini's Growth
Google attributes the surge partly to product features that go beyond text chat: 63% of Gemini interactions now happen through voice, and roughly one in five sessions use live tools like camera feeds and screen sharing rather than typed prompts. The app also generates more than 150 million images daily, a volume Google frames as particularly useful for small businesses producing marketing material. That usage pattern suggests Gemini's growth isn't purely users switching from ChatGPT -- it's also new use cases (voice assistants, live camera interaction) that overlap with Google's existing Android and Search distribution advantages in ways OpenAI's standalone app can't easily replicate.
The Leadership Context
The milestone lands weeks after Demis Hassabis stepped back from day-to-day management of Google DeepMind to become chair, with Koray Kavukcuoglu now running the lab that builds the models underpinning Gemini. A leadership transition at the model-building layer landing at the same moment as a record user-growth milestone at the product layer is a coincidence of timing, not causation -- Gemini's user growth reflects months of product decisions predating Kavukcuoglu's elevation, not a new strategy already bearing fruit.
The Competitive Field
Gemini's billion-user milestone puts it alongside ChatGPT as the only two AI assistants operating at that scale, well ahead of Anthropic's Claude, Meta's AI assistant, and Chinese rivals like Alibaba's Qwen-powered products on raw consumer reach, even though several of those rivals lead on developer-focused or enterprise metrics instead. Google's distribution advantage -- Gemini is now built into Android, Search, and Google's Workspace suite -- gives it a structural growth channel OpenAI has to build through app-store downloads and standalone marketing instead.
The Counterweight
Monthly active users is a relatively low bar for engagement -- it counts anyone who opened the app once in a 30-day window, not necessarily someone using it as a daily tool the way power users treat ChatGPT or Claude for actual work. Google has also faced recurring questions about whether Gemini's growth reflects genuine product-market fit or default placement across Android and Search pushing users toward an app they might not have sought out independently. Neither company has published retention or daily-active-user figures that would let outside observers judge how much of this billion-user base is habitual versus incidental.
The Number Neither Company Publishes
A daily-active-to-monthly-active ratio, if either company ever disclosed it, would separate genuine habitual use from a billion people who each opened the app once this month because it's now the default option on their phone.
