Jessica Fischer, CFO of Charter Communications since 2021, is leaving the company on Oct. 15 to become CFO of a joint venture between Blackstone and Google that's building US AI computing infrastructure, Fortune reported. The venture, announced in May 2026, is run by CEO Benjamin Treynor Sloss, a longtime Google infrastructure executive, and Blackstone has committed an initial $5 billion in equity toward a target of 500 megawatts of AI computing capacity by 2027, with plans for substantially more capacity beyond that.
Why This Particular Move Is a Signal
Charter is the No. 85 company on the Fortune 500, competing in a mature, increasingly commoditized broadband and cable market that's been losing subscribers for several quarters. Fischer's job there was managing a large, established capital base in a slow-growth industry. The AI infrastructure venture she's joining is close to the opposite: a company making massive, front-loaded capital commitments against uncertain multi-year demand, financed through structures that increasingly resemble project finance -- long-term leases, take-or-pay compute contracts, debt raised against specific facilities -- rather than traditional corporate capex. That's a specific, transferable skill set, and it's exactly the kind of finance talent AI infrastructure ventures need as the deals get larger and more structurally complex.

This is one data point, not a trend on its own, but it fits a pattern Fortune's own reporting flagged: other recent CFO moves into growth-stage or restructuring situations include Dave Hulays's promotion at Hershey and new CFO appointments at American Healthcare REIT and Mission Critical Group -- senior finance talent generally reallocating toward wherever capital is actively being deployed at scale, which in 2026 is disproportionately AI infrastructure.
The Broader Capital Reallocation Question
Chicago Fed president Austan Goolsbee argued this week that the AI data-center boom is "very hot, but largely shoving other parts of the economy down," pointing specifically to labor and input costs -- Pulse covered his comments alongside the administration's competing "Golden Goose" framing of AI capex. A Fortune 500 telecom CFO leaving a stable, cash-generative business for an unproven infrastructure venture is a microcosm of the same reallocation Goolsbee is describing at the macro level: talent and capital both moving toward AI infrastructure, out of industries that aren't shrinking so much as losing their claim on the marginal dollar and the marginal hire.
What determines whether this was a good career bet: whether the Blackstone-Google venture's 500-megawatt target actually gets built and contracted at the returns Blackstone underwrote, in a year when Texas has already frozen new data-center grid connections over unverified demand and financing structures across the sector remain largely untested through a full economic cycle.
The Financing Structure Behind the Move
Blackstone's approach to AI infrastructure has increasingly followed a specific template: commit initial equity to seed a venture, then layer in project-level debt against signed customer contracts once a facility has committed tenants, the same structure real estate and energy infrastructure funds have used for decades applied to a new asset class. That's different from how Big Tech itself finances data centers -- Microsoft, Google and Amazon largely build on their own balance sheets -- and it's part of why the venture needed a CFO with Fischer's specific background managing large, structured capital programs rather than a generalist finance executive.
