Analysis
California-based companies have raised $385 billion in seed-through-growth funding in 2026, more than double last year's total and more than the entire United States raised in any prior year on record, according to Crunchbase News.
OpenAI and Anthropic together account for more than half of that statewide total, and California now captures more than three-quarters of all US startup funding this year -- up sharply from prior years when the state's share, while always dominant, left more room for New York, Massachusetts and Texas.
The concentration extends to early-stage deals too: California companies raised roughly $62 billion in seed and early-stage funding in 2026, about 57% of the US total at that stage.
Beyond OpenAI and Anthropic, the state's biggest rounds this year include:
- Waymo -- $16 billion (February)
- xAI -- $20 billion (earlier this year; now folded into Texas-based SpaceX)
- Prometheus -- $12 billion (spring)
Two more rounds rounded out the list:
- Databricks -- $5 billion (August)
- Safe Superintelligence -- $5 billion (summer)
Strip out OpenAI, Anthropic, Waymo, xAI, Prometheus, Databricks and Safe Superintelligence, and the remaining California total looks far closer to a normal year -- a reminder that a "California" funding record is really a handful of company-specific bets, not a diversified regional boom.
