President Trump will host Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a private dinner at the White House this evening, according to Axios, marking the first one-on-one meeting between the two men. The invitation comes two days after a federal appeals court upheld the Pentagon's decision to exclude Anthropic from its supply chain, and days after Amodei was the only major AI lab chief absent from Trump's state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping.
A Pointed Absence, Then an Invitation
OpenAI's Sam Altman, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Elon Musk all appeared alongside Trump at last Thursday's state dinner for Xi. Amodei's team cited a scheduling conflict, but the optics were hard to miss: Anthropic has been the most openly antagonistic frontier lab toward the administration's AI posture, and its CEO was the one name missing from the photo line. The Pentagon Fight Behind the Timing
The dinner lands right after a bruising legal loss for Anthropic. In a 2-1 ruling on Sept. 25, a federal appeals court upheld the Defense Department's designation of Anthropic as a "supply chain risk," a label first applied in March after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth demanded Anthropic strip Claude's restrictions on fully autonomous lethal weapons and mass domestic surveillance. Anthropic refused, and the Pentagon canceled its military contracts and barred other defense contractors from using Claude. Judge Gregory Katsas wrote for the majority that the designation reflected a legitimate national-security judgment rather than retaliation against Anthropic's regulatory advocacy -- a distinction Anthropic disputes and says it's still contesting in a separate case.
Two Different Views Of What AI Needs Right Now
The underlying disagreement predates this week. Amodei has spent much of 2026 pushing a public case for slowing frontier AI development and building in safety guardrails before capability races outrun oversight. Trump and senior officials have gone the other direction, framing AI-safety alarm as overstated. That gap hasn't closed, and nothing reported so far suggests the Pentagon designation is actually on the table tonight -- whether the goodwill converts into anything commercially remains to be seen.
What A Warmer Photo Doesn't Fix
The risk for Anthropic is that a friendlier dinner buys sentiment without buying back the thing that matters commercially: access to defense and federal contracts that rivals can still bid for. Anthropic's consumer and enterprise business keeps growing regardless of Washington's mood, but the government-compute and defense-integration opportunity OpenAI has leaned into is one Anthropic is currently locked out of by statute, not sentiment. Amodei's presence at the table tonight is notable given how far apart the two sides have been; whether it produces anything beyond a photo depends on what, if anything, gets discussed about reversing the supply-chain designation itself.
