Fund, and the same week Nvidia committed up to $105 billion in financing for OpenAI's Ohio data center. Ohio has spent the past two years building a deliberate pitch to hard-tech and AI infrastructure founders -- cheap industrial land, existing manufacturing labor pools and state-level capital funds -- and this week's cluster of announcements suggests that pitch is starting to convert into actual company formation, not just data center leases.
The risk for 1872 is the same one every physical-manufacturing automation startup faces: robotics and AI can dramatically improve throughput in a controlled pilot facility, but scaling that performance across multiple sites, weld types and steel grades, while meeting the certification standards structural steel buyers require, is a multi-year execution problem that has stalled better-capitalized manufacturing startups before.
