Quick Answer

Carta and Value Add VC are different products. Carta is equity management software, free on its Launch plan for startups with under 25 stakeholders and less than $1 million raised, and it publishes free State of Private Markets research. Value Add VC is a free database of investors, funding rounds and SEC Form D filings. Use Carta to run your cap table and Value Add VC to research the market.

Carta and Value Add VC are not substitutes. Carta runs your equity: cap table, SAFEs, 409A valuations and fund administration. Value Add VC helps you research the market: who invests in what, who raised, and which companies just filed a Form D. Use Carta to manage ownership and Value Add VC to find investors and track rounds, and read Carta's free research either way.

What each product actually is

Carta is private-capital software. Its homepage describes a platform for private capital operations “from equity management and fund admin, to legal and compliance,” and says it is “Trusted by 50,000 companies” (Internet Archive capture of October 3, 2026). Its product menu includes cap table management, 409A valuations, SAFE financings and fund administration.

Value Add VC is a free research site. As of October 5, 2026 it tracked about 1,600 investor firms on its investor directory, about 1,300 companies on its company directory and 409 startup rounds with verified dollar figures on the Funding Tracker, plus SEC Form D filings on Raise Radar and daily news on the Pulse.

Is Carta free? Carta Launch, explained

Carta's Launch page says “Carta Launch is for startups with under 25 stakeholders and less than $1 million raised.” Asked whether it is really free, Carta answers: “Yes, it sure is. You can sign up in just a few clicks, and no credit card is needed or required for as long as you're on the Launch platform.” Launch includes tools to “manage your cap table, issue equity, and fundraise from day one,” with SAFE templates and scenario modeling.

The limit is growth: “If your company has more than 25 stakeholders, has raised more than $1M, or needs a 409A valuation, you can easily upgrade in-product to one of our plans priced for early-stage companies.” Those plan prices are not listed on the Launch page. Value Add VC has no pricing page at all (valueaddvc.com/pricing returns a 404); everything is free, including the newsletter.

Where they overlap: data and benchmarks

Carta's Insights team publishes the free State of Private Markets reports, built from activity on its platform. The 2025 in review edition, published February 18, 2026, reports that “Startups on Carta combined to raise nearly $120 billion in new funding in 2025, up nearly 17% from 2024,” and says the full report “includes 27 additional charts and analysis on fundraising and valuation at all stages, deal terms, dilution, geographical trends, and more.” It is free to read.

Those are aggregate numbers: they tell you what a typical seed round looked like on Carta, not which company raised from whom. Value Add VC works at the named-deal level. Each Funding Tracker round links to its source story, the full dataset downloads as CSV or JSON from /api/funding-data, and Raise Radar lists Form D filings with a link to each one on EDGAR.

Our fund benchmarking dashboard compiles published benchmarks from Carta, PitchBook and Cambridge Associates. For startup round benchmarks, Carta's own reports are the primary source; we link to them rather than compete with them.

AI access: different data, different purpose

Carta's homepage invites customers to “Connect Carta to Claude and put it to work” and features a cap table plugin for Claude. Those tools work on a customer's own cap table and fund data inside Carta. Value Add VC's MCP server answers questions about the market (companies, investors, rounds, Form D filings and news), is free, and needs no account or API key, with a limit of 300 requests per hour per IP.

Who should use which

Use Carta if you need to manage a cap table, issue equity, run a SAFE round, get a 409A valuation or administer a fund. That is Carta's business, and Launch is free for very early companies.

Use Value Add VC if you are building an investor list, checking who led a round, watching Form D filings in your sector, or looking up the terms in a term sheet in the VC glossary.

Use both if you are a founder raising a round: Value Add VC to find and research investors, Carta to close and record the round. For the cap table market specifically, see our cap table software ranking, and compare Value Add VC vs PitchBook, vs Crunchbase and vs CB Insights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Carta free for startups?

Carta Launch is free for startups with under 25 stakeholders and less than $1 million raised, and Carta says no credit card is needed for as long as you stay on Launch. Once a company has more than 25 stakeholders, has raised more than $1 million or needs a 409A valuation, Carta says it can upgrade to a paid plan; those prices are not published on the Launch page.

Can Carta replace a VC database?

Not really. Carta is equity management software. Its State of Private Markets reports are strong aggregate benchmarks built from startups on Carta, but they do not give you searchable investor profiles or company-by-company round histories. For that you need a database such as Value Add VC, Crunchbase or PitchBook.

Can Value Add VC replace Carta?

No. Value Add VC is market research, not equity software. It cannot hold your cap table, issue equity, generate SAFEs or produce a 409A valuation. If you need those tools, Carta Launch is free for very early startups.

Is Carta's State of Private Markets report free?

Yes. Carta's State of Private Markets page says the full report is available to start reading for free, and the 2025 in review edition adds 27 charts on fundraising and valuation at all stages, deal terms, dilution and geographic trends. It covers startups on Carta in aggregate, not named companies.

Which has better benchmarks, Carta or Value Add VC?

Carta, for startup round benchmarks, because they come from its own platform data. Value Add VC's free benchmarking dashboard compiles published fund benchmarks from Carta, PitchBook and Cambridge Associates, so it is a convenient summary rather than an independent dataset.
