What's covered — honestly

  • 1,200+ profiled companies and 1,600+ investors, each fact with an as-of date, method and source.
  • The venture-relevant US SEC Form D filings since April 2026 (operating companies and VC/PE funds; real estate, energy, banking, insurance and similar industries are excluded), with EDGAR links.
  • Funding rounds parsed hourly from ~25 wire and trade-press feeds, and the Value Add Pulse news archive.
  • It is a curated slice of the market, not a census. When a lookup misses, the server says so instead of guessing, and may queue the name for research.

Limits and privacy

  • 300 requests per hour per IP; each message in a batch counts.
  • No account, cookies or API key. Read-only: nothing you send changes our data.
  • Missed lookups are stored as normalized search text, tool and time only — no IP, user agent or conversation. Each is searched at most once to classify it, then discarded unless it is a company or investment firm; unprocessed misses are deleted after 14 days.
  • Please cite the url each record carries. See our editorial standards.

FAQ

What is the Value Add VC MCP server?

A free, read-only Model Context Protocol server at https://valueaddvc.com/api/mcp. It lets AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code look up companies, investors, funding rounds, SEC Form D filings and venture news from Value Add VC, with the date and source of every figure.

Does it cost anything or need an API key?

No. The server is free and needs no account, API key or OAuth. Add the URL as a connector in your AI client and start asking questions.

How fresh and how complete is the data?

Wire and trade-press funding rounds refresh hourly, SEC Form D filings daily, and profiles as new sources arrive. Coverage is a curated slice of the market: 1,200+ profiled companies and 1,600+ investors, plus venture-relevant US SEC Form D filings since April 2026 (operating companies and VC/PE funds; real estate, energy, banking, insurance and similar industries are excluded). A company we don't profile is not evidence it doesn't exist.

What happens when it can't find a company?

The server says the company is not in Value Add VC's verified data yet and shows any SEC Form D filings that match the name, clearly labelled unverified. It says "queued for research" only when the miss has been written to our research queue. Each night the most-requested queued names are searched once on the public web to classify them. A company is added only if reputable sources confirm it and every fact is backed by a quote we re-check; anything else is discarded. Investment firms are recorded as demand but not yet added automatically, and if a name turns out to be a person we stop and keep nothing about them. We make no promise about when, or whether, a name is added.

Are there rate limits?

Yes: 300 requests per hour per IP address. Batch requests count each message. If you need more for a research project, contact Trace Cohen.

What do you log?

When a lookup finds nothing we store the normalized search text, the tool name, a count and minute-level times in Vercel Blob. We never store an IP address, user agent, account or conversation content, and searches that look like an email, phone number, URL or ID are dropped. The nightly research job searches each processed name once to classify it, then discards it: only names identified as companies or investment firms appear in our research report, and everything else is kept at most as a count (plus a one-way hash for 14 days so it is not searched twice). Queries not processed within 14 days of first being seen are deleted.
