PitchBook is the institutional private-market database, and it is priced that way. Value Add VC is a free, open, much smaller research site. If your job depends on depth, comps and Excel workflows, PitchBook is worth a trial. If you need to look up investors, track rounds and read Form D filings without a contract, start with Value Add VC.

Disclosure: Value Add VC is our own product, so read this as a vendor comparison written by one of the vendors. Every PitchBook fact below links to the PitchBook page it came from, and we say plainly where PitchBook is the better product. See our editorial standards.
The short answer
These two products are not the same size, and we will not pretend otherwise. As of October 5, 2026, PitchBook's homepage counters showed about 13.4 million companies, 3.3 million deals, 647,000 investors and 175,000 funds (Internet Archive capture). On the same day, Value Add VC tracked about 1,300 companies on its company directory, about 1,600 investor firms on its investor directory, and 409 startup rounds with verified dollar figures on the Funding Tracker.
What Value Add VC offers instead of breadth is access: no price, no sales call, sourced and dated figures, SEC Form D data surfaced as a product, and a free MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor query the data directly. For most founders, angels and students that is enough. For an investment team doing comps every day, it is not.

PitchBook pricing: what it actually says
PitchBook publishes no prices, plans or starting figures. On its pricing page it says: “Pricing options vary depending on how many seats you need and your firm type. Another primary consideration is whether you're interested in additional premium offerings, such as Direct Data or CRM Integration.” The same page says PitchBook “is geared towards sophisticated investment professionals,” and that if you want to join, you can “fill out a form and we'll see if a free trial might be right for you.”
Value Add VC has no pricing page at all (valueaddvc.com/pricing returns a 404), no seats and no trial clock. The newsletter is free to subscribe.
What PitchBook does better
Depth and breadth. PitchBook's dataset list on its pricing page covers private equity deals and manager data, venture capital deals and manager data, strategic M&A, limited partner data, public company fundamentals, service providers, people, patents, hedge funds, leveraged loan news and index data. Value Add VC covers a narrow slice of venture: notable rounds, investor firms, Form D filings and daily news.
Workflow tools. According to PitchBook's Excel plugin page, the Excel plugins “are included in your subscription and free to download,” with “prebuilt templates” for “investor tear sheets, comparables, and valuations,” plus a PowerPoint plugin that refreshes charts and tables from Excel. Value Add VC has nothing comparable.
Fund performance data. PitchBook's homepage counts about 175,000 funds. Our benchmarking dashboard is a free compilation of published benchmarks from Carta, PitchBook and Cambridge Associates, not a proprietary fund database.
What Value Add VC does better
Price and access. Everything is free and needs no account: investor profiles, company profiles, the Funding Tracker, Raise Radar, the 100-term VC glossary, the VC job board and the tools directory.
SEC Form D as a product. A company relying on Regulation D must file a Form D notice within 15 days after the first sale of securities, according to the SEC. Raise Radar lists recent Form D filings by private companies whose raise is not yet in our news coverage, with a link to each filing on EDGAR; on October 5, 2026 it showed 163 filings dated August 3 to October 2, 2026. PitchBook's pricing page does not list a Form D product.
Free AI and data access. Our MCP server is free, needs no account or API key, and allows 300 requests per hour per IP. The full Funding Tracker dataset downloads as JSON or CSV from /api/funding-data (60 requests per hour). PitchBook's API and data feed are sold as Direct Data, a premium add-on.
Who should choose which
Choose Value Add VC if you are a founder, angel, student, emerging manager or journalist who needs to find investors, check whether a startup has raised, or follow the market without a budget. Pair it with SEC EDGAR for primary filings.
Choose PitchBook if you work at a fund, bank, PE firm or corporate development team and your output depends on comps, valuations, LP data and Excel models. That is what PitchBook is built and priced for.
Use both if you have PitchBook at work but want a free, keyless feed of Form D filings and daily round news inside your AI assistant. Value Add VC is a complement, not a replacement.
