Spectrum Equity profile

written 2026-10-24

Spectrum Equity is a Boston, San Francisco and London growth equity firm that writes $25M-$250M checks into software, AI and data companies.

What Spectrum Equity does

Spectrum Equity is a growth equity firm, not a venture firm. It was founded in 1994, has offices in Boston, San Francisco and London, and today focuses on software, artificial intelligence and data businesses. It says it is often the first institutional investor in a company and takes a flexible approach to structure, including minority recapitalizations and change of control transactions, with capital that ranges from shareholder liquidity to growth funding.[1]

The firm generally invests $25 million to $250 million per company, with additional capacity for follow-ons. Its latest fund targets rapidly growing, capital-efficient, founder-led companies with little or no prior institutional capital. At that check size Spectrum is a growth-stage investor, not a seed or Series A lead.[1],[2]

In its October 2026 fund announcement the firm said it had 78 employees and 48 active portfolio companies. Since 1994 it has raised over $12.5 billion from limited partners across 11 main funds and invested in more than 190 companies. That figure is capital raised, not assets under management.[2]

History

Spectrum lists offices in Boston, San Francisco and London. Its two co-managing partners sit in different cities, Ben Spero in San Francisco and Mike Farrell in Boston. In the Fund XI announcement Spero described the firm's approach as investing across each wave of innovation while avoiding the volatility of hype cycles.[3],[2]

The firm's About page counts 130+ exits across its history. The same page still shows older counters for capital raised and companies backed, which the October 2026 release supersedes.[1]

Funds

On October 8, 2026 Spectrum announced the close of Fund XI, which raised a total of $2.5 billion in an oversubscribed, single close. The firm says it is its largest fund since the 1994 founding and describes the growth in fund size as measured. Mike Farrell said more than 50 of the Fund XI investors are founders, executives or board members of companies Spectrum has backed, alongside long-standing limited partners and several new ones.[2]

The release does not give sizes for the ten earlier main funds, and no performance figures are published on the pages reviewed.[2]

People

Ben Spero and Mike Farrell are co-managing partners and managing directors. The team page also lists Adam Margolin, Parag Khandelwal, Matt Neidlinger, Jeff Haywood, Steve LeSieur, John Connolly, Chris Mitchell, Vic Parker and Michael Radonich as managing directors. Ronan Cunningham is managing director and head of investor relations, Leah Palmer is managing director and general counsel, and Brian Regan is managing director and chief financial officer. Investment staff are split across Boston, San Francisco and London.[3]

Portfolio and notable investments

CyberCube, the cyber risk analytics company, announced on October 1, 2025 an investment of more than $180M by Spectrum, subject to regulatory approvals. Spectrum joined existing investors ForgePoint Capital, Hudson Structured Capital Management and MTech Capital as a cornerstone investor. No valuation was disclosed.[4]

SavvyMoney announced a $225 million minority investment co-led by PSG and Canapi Ventures on October 27, 2025. Spectrum took part as a continuing investor; the company says Spectrum first invested in 2021. Other deal headlines on the firm's news page include Quavo Fraud & Disputes securing a $300 Million growth investment from Spectrum, and splose, an allied-health practice software company, closing an AUD$46M round led by Spectrum.[5],[6]

The Fund XI release says Spectrum has invested in splose, WorkFlex, Xapien and Symmetric in 2026 to date, plus a consumer marketplace company it had not yet named. The news page also carries a headline that Xapien secured $56 Million, but the headline does not say how much of that Spectrum provided.[2],[6]

The portfolio page lists more than just current holdings. Companies shown without an exit tag include Lucid Software, Kajabi, Customer.io, Otter.ai, Rover, Scribd, Headspace, Spreedly and Prezi, and the page text does not say which of them Spectrum still holds. One headline on the news page reports that Lucid received a $500M+ secondary investment at a $3 Billion valuation. The headline carries no date in the text reviewed and does not state Spectrum's role.[7],[6],[2]

Exits

The firm names AllTrails, Ancestry, Definitive Healthcare, GoodRx, SurveyMonkey and Verafin as notable realizations. Its portfolio page tags Ancestry as acquired by Blackstone, Verafin by Nasdaq, ITA Software by Google, Ethoca by Mastercard, Lynda.com by LinkedIn, Netscreen by Juniper Networks, RiskMetrics Group by MSCI and World-Check by Thomson Reuters. Deal values are not given on the page.[2],[7]
