Qualcomm announced a multi-generational partnership with Amazon on September 8 to co-develop custom AI inference chips and high-speed optical interconnects for next-generation AWS data centers, in a deal Qualcomm says is tied to up to $60 billion in potential commercial transactions over its life. Bloomberg reported that Qualcomm shares jumped as much as 10% on the news, one of the stock's largest single-day moves in the past year.
The structure is unusual: alongside the chip development agreement, Qualcomm issued Amazon a warrant to acquire up to 25 million shares at $161.26 apiece -- a potential $4 billion stake that vests in tranches tied to purchase milestones, according to PR Newswire's release. That mechanic mirrors the equity-for-commitment structures Nvidia and OpenAI have used in recent chip and compute deals -- it gives Amazon direct financial upside in Qualcomm's success, which is meant to keep both sides locked into the roadmap through multiple chip generations rather than a single order.
Entering a market it doesn't currently play in
Qualcomm's data-center AI chip revenue today is close to zero -- its business is overwhelmingly mobile and automotive silicon. This deal is Qualcomm's most concrete attempt yet to break into the custom-ASIC market that Broadcom and Marvell already split between them (an estimated 95% combined share, per Motley Fool's analysis). The focus on inference rather than training chips is a deliberate wedge: inference workloads value power efficiency per query more than raw training throughput, and Qualcomm's decades in mobile-chip power management is a more direct fit there than it would be competing head-on with Nvidia's training GPUs.
Amazon, meanwhile, is diversifying its own AI silicon supply chain. AWS already has an in-house chip program (Trainium and Inferentia) and has separately tripled its Nvidia chip orders this year -- adding Qualcomm as a third silicon partner spreads AWS's dependence across in-house, Nvidia and now Qualcomm design teams, reducing the risk of any single vendor's supply or pricing dictating AWS's AI infrastructure costs.
The optical-interconnect piece is a smaller but technically significant part of the deal: Qualcomm will develop connections running up to 1.6 terabits per second, a speed class aimed at reducing the bottleneck between chips inside massive AI training and inference clusters -- a problem that has become as important as raw compute as cluster sizes have scaled into the hundreds of thousands of chips.
What the announcement doesn't include is a binding purchase commitment. The $60 billion figure is described as "potential commercial transactions," not a signed order book, and the warrant vests only as Amazon actually buys chips -- meaning Qualcomm's revenue from this deal could take years to materialize, if it materializes at the scale described at all. Qualcomm has talked up data-center ambitions before without translating them into meaningful revenue share against Nvidia or Broadcom, and a 10% stock pop on an announcement is a bet on execution the company hasn't yet proven at this scale.
