OpenAI will start showing visual display ads next to the images ChatGPT generates, the company said October 5, extending an ad business that only crossed a $1 billion annualized run rate about 200 days after launch. The ads will appear later this month, US-only at first, clearly labeled, and OpenAI says they won't influence what ChatGPT actually generates, per TechCrunch's reporting.
What's new here is the ad format, not the ad business itself. Since introducing ads to fund free and low-cost tiers earlier this year, OpenAI has rolled them out to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, South Korea and, in August, India -- all text-based placements inside chat. Visual ads tied to image generation are the first unit built specifically around ChatGPT's most commercially-loaded feature: a user who just asked for a product shot, an outfit, or a room design is further down the purchase funnel than someone asking a general question.

The ads will only touch Free and Go-tier users, the same wedge OpenAI has used in every market so far, leaving Plus and Enterprise ad-free. With ChatGPT ads already live in more than 40 countries and the company working toward its full 1.2 billion weekly users, the free tier is becoming the subsidy engine for the compute-heavy paid products -- the same model Google and Meta built, just arriving at OpenAI a decade later and at AI-infrastructure cost levels.
OpenAI says it's still expanding its ad-measurement tools and brand-suitability safeguards -- the harder problem, since an AI image generator producing content next to a paid ad is a moderation challenge Meta and Google spent years hardening before OpenAI had to.
