THE RUNDOWN

1

The close confirms the $15.75B valuation Pulse flagged as pending five weeks ago, with Kleiner Perkins joining as a new investor.

2

Crossing $1B in annualized run rate on 15x+ year-over-year growth is the clearest signal yet that AI-specific cloud infrastructure has real paying demand.

3

Sandboxes alone running at a $300M rate suggests AI agents executing and testing code is becoming its own durable category, not a training-compute sideline.

4

Customers like DoorDash, Cognition and Runway are production users, not pilots -- the detail infrastructure skeptics should weigh most heavily.

The figure worth isolating is the $300M Sandboxes run rate, not the headline $750M raise -- it means a meaningful share of Modal's growth comes from AI agents executing code, a structurally stickier use case than the GPU-rental model most AI-infra investors are still underwriting.

Analysis

Modal Labs has closed the $750 million Series D that Pulse first reported as pending on September 28, confirming the $15.75 billion post-money valuation.

The AI infrastructure company also says it has crossed $1 billion in annualized run rate, with usage tripling since its Series C announcement just five months earlier. Accel led the round. Kleiner Perkins joined as a new investor, with existing backers Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst, Redpoint, Lux Capital, Amplify Partners and Bain Capital Ventures all returning, according to Modal's announcement. Modal says year-over-year growth is running at more than 15x, and that its Sandboxes product -- compute environments that let AI agents run and test code -- is on its own $300 million annualized run rate, having spun up close to 3 billion sandboxes since launching in 2023. The company says it can run a million sandboxes concurrently across a capacity pool spanning more than 20 clouds, and now employs 200+ people across New York, San Francisco and Stockholm.

Named customers include DoorDash, Cognition, Ramp, Linear, Hebbia, Runway and Physical Intelligence -- revenue-paying companies rather than pilot logos, the strongest evidence that Modal's bet on AI-specific cloud infrastructure is working. The risk, as with any infrastructure company riding the AI capex wave, is that a chunk of that $1 billion run rate is still usage-based billing tied to a small number of very large AI labs; TypeSafe AI alone reportedly served 1 trillion tokens on Modal in three days. If even one of those customers builds the capability in-house, the growth curve bends fast, which is the counterweight any infra-focused investor has to underwrite before chasing the next round at this valuation.

Whether Modal's next raise is priced on infrastructure multiples or on software-company multiples is the number that will tell investors which bet actually paid off.
