Why I'm Skeptical of the 'IPO Window Is Open' Story

Everyone's calling this the best IPO market in years, and the aggregate numbers back that up -- but Monday's tape and Lyntris's soft debut are the two data points the bulls keep leaving out.

Lyntris priced below range and dropped 10% in a year everyone's calling a seller's market -- that's the one data point I'd want every founder timing an IPO to sit with before assuming their own deal clears easily. Match your comps to Lyntris's actual debut, not to the aggregate 237-IPO count.

Analysis

Every banker I talk to right now wants to tell me the IPO window is wide open -- 237 pricings this year, up from last year's pace, Anthropic and Nscale and Kakao Mobility all converging on the same few months, DeepSeek working its own track toward Shanghai. I don't think the story is wrong exactly. I think it's incomplete in the specific way that always precedes a correction: everyone's citing the aggregate count and nobody's talking about the two data points that actually tell you how the market is going to treat the next debut.

The first is Lyntris. Pulse previously covered Lyntris. It priced below range the week of Aug. 20 and ended its first day down 10%. That's not a rounding error -- that's a company and its bankers misjudging demand badly enough to eat a real markdown on listing day, in a year everyone insists is a seller's market. The second is Monday. The Dow fell 0.9% today after US strikes on Iranian targets and hawkish Fed commentary pushed rate-hike odds up, per Monday's market wrap, and Alphabet and Amazon both sold off more than 1.5%. Neither of those is an IPO-specific event, but both are exactly the kind of macro backdrop that turns a "the window is open" narrative into a "actually maybe wait for the volatility to clear" reality inside of a single trading session.

โ€œThat's the tell, not the aggregate 237-IPO count everyone keeps citing.โ€

None of this means Anthropic's IPO won't price well -- a $65 billion revenue run-rate and Salesforce marking its own stake up $2.6 billion this week are real, company-specific tailwinds that don't depend on the macro backdrop holding steady. But Nscale, Kakao Mobility and any smaller name without Anthropic's scale advantage are exactly the kind of listings that get squeezed when macro volatility ticks up mid-process -- underwriters price wider, roadshows get shortened, and the deals that were marginal to begin with either get pulled or eat a Lyntris-style discount.

Room for disagreement: a single soft debut and a single red trading day are thin evidence for a full skeptical thesis, and IPO markets have absorbed worse macro noise than one Middle East strike and one hawkish Fed speech without missing a beat plenty of times this cycle. It's entirely possible September opens strong regardless, and I'm simply pattern-matching two data points that turn out to be noise. I'd rather be early and wrong on this than miss the turn, but I'll say plainly: I could be wrong here.

What I'm actually watching: whether Nscale or Kakao Mobility price meaningfully below where their own investor materials have been pitching. That's the tell, not the aggregate 237-IPO count everyone keeps citing.

The Fall IPO Pipeline, By the Numbers

237 IPOs have priced in the US so far in 2026, up 3% from this point last year -- but August was a pause, and the real test is whether Anthropic, DeepSeek, Nscale and Kakao Mobility actually price in the weeks ahead.

DeepSeek's Road to a 2027 IPO Looks Nothing Like Anthropic's

DeepSeek is trying to close a second $7.4 billion round at a $74 billion valuation ahead of a targeted 2027 Shanghai listing -- a governance structure with almost nothing in common with Anthropic's path.
