IonQ received a $28 million contract extension under DARPA's "It's About Time" program to scale production of its Evergreen-05 optical atomic clocks, the company said this week, with plans to deliver 125 units to U.S. government customers, according to IonQ. IonQ will invest roughly $15 million in dedicated manufacturing space, testing equipment and staff to fulfill the order. Evergreen-05 is a shoebox-sized clock -- about 1/75th the volume of an active hydrogen maser -- rated to lose less than one second over 30 million years, with applications in radar, secure communications and precision geolocation.
The award is notable less for its size -- $28 million is small next to the mega-rounds moving through AI infrastructure this week -- than for what it signals about IonQ's diversification. IonQ picked up the underlying clock technology through its October 2025 acquisition of Vector Atomic; DARPA has funded the core research since 2019, years before Vector became part of IonQ. Optical atomic clocks provide timing precision far beyond GPS-linked systems, giving IonQ a second, government-anchored hardware revenue line that doesn't depend on trapped-ion quantum computing reaching commercial scale.
For a company still years from proving quantum computing's core commercial case, steady, expanding DARPA relationships offer something venture-funded AI labs mostly can't show yet: recurring, non-dilutive government revenue tied to hardware that's already shipping, not a roadmap. The risk is scale -- $28 million and 125 units is a rounding error against IonQ's market capitalization, and the company still needs to show this kind of contract can grow into a material revenue line rather than staying a niche defense sideline.
