ICEYE, the Finnish operator of the world's largest synthetic-aperture radar satellite constellation, raised a 1 billion EUR Series F, including 450 million EUR of new primary capital, at a valuation exceeding 10 billion EUR, according to EQT's announcement. The round was co-led by the newly launched Scaleup Europe Fund, established by the European Commission and a group of European investors and managed by EQT -- ICEYE is that fund's first-ever investment.
ICEYE, founded in 2014, sells radar imagery that works through cloud cover and darkness, a capability optical satellites like Planet Labs and Maxar's fleets can't match, and it already delivers end-to-end sovereign space-intelligence systems to seven European governments. The Scaleup Europe Fund's choice of ICEYE as its debut check is itself a signal: after years of European governments buying satellite imagery from Maxar and other US providers, the EU is now directly capitalizing a domestic alternative in a category increasingly treated as defense infrastructure, not a commercial nice-to-have.
The counterweight: a 10B EUR-plus valuation on a satellite-imagery business prices in years of government contract growth that has to materialize on normal defense-procurement timelines, which run slower than venture-backed growth assumptions typically tolerate, and ICEYE still competes for the same government budgets as Maxar, Planet Labs and a growing field of new SAR entrants.
