Google is integrating Gemini directly into Waymo's robotaxis as an in-car conversational assistant, the companies said this week, with Waymo redesigning the touchscreens across all three of its rider-facing displays around a new "lean-back" interface built specifically for AI-guided rides.
Inside the vehicle, Gemini will function as a conversational passenger of sorts -- able to answer questions about nearby landmarks, help riders find stores along their route, and adjust cabin settings like temperature on request. Rather than bolting a chatbot onto the existing screens, Waymo rebuilt the interface around the assumption that riders will talk to the car, treating conversational AI as the primary interaction model instead of a secondary feature.

The integration is also a case study in what vertical integration inside Alphabet actually looks like in practice: the same week Google DeepMind shipped Gemini Robotics 2 for physical robot control, the company is also pushing its latest model generation into a commercial, revenue-generating robotaxi product. Few competitors can match that -- building a frontier model and a large-scale autonomous vehicle fleet under one roof lets Alphabet deploy model advances across physical and consumer products almost simultaneously.
Waymo remains Alphabet's most credible answer to Tesla's robotaxi ambitions, and deepening the Gemini integration is as much a product differentiation move against Tesla's more utilitarian ride experience as it is a technical upgrade.
