Ten launch partners including Marriott, Hilton, IHG and Expedia means Google solved the supply problem that has killed every AI travel startup I have seen pitch. If you are building here, the honest question is which itineraries Google will never bother to serve well -- group trips, corporate policy compliance, award-availability arbitrage. Those are real businesses. A general-purpose AI trip planner is now a feature inside the world's largest travel funnel, and it is free.

Analysis

Google has added agentic travel capabilities to AI Mode: flight-price tracking across more than 300 airlines and travel sites, hotel discovery and booking, and the ability to show costs in airline miles or credit-card points, TechCrunch reported. Flight tracking is live in over 180 countries and points display is global; hotel booking is rolling out in the US in English first, with partners including Booking.com, Choice Hotels International, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG, Marriott, Priceline, Trip.com and Wyndham.

The strategic logic

Travel is the highest-value vertical in search advertising, and it is the one most exposed to an AI interface that answers without a click. Google's defense is to own the transaction rather than the referral. Booking a Marriott room inside AI Mode keeps the intent, the data and the commission inside Google's surface instead of handing it to Expedia's landing page. That the ten launch partners include both hotel chains and the online travel agencies that sit between them is the interesting part -- Google convinced direct suppliers and their aggregators to appear on the same shelf.

“Perplexity shipped shopping and travel agents in 2024 and 2025 with modest traction.”

Where this sits competitively

OpenAI has been building the same muscle from the other direction: Operator for browser actions, and now an advertising business, launched this week in India on free and Go tiers with a self-serve Ads Manager opening Sept. 4. Amazon's Rufus sits on top of a transaction already. Perplexity shipped shopping and travel agents in 2024 and 2025 with modest traction. Expedia and Booking Holdings have each launched their own AI trip planners, which is the awkward position of building an assistant while also being a supplier inside someone else's.

What is not disclosed

Google did not publish AI Mode usage numbers, and did not say whether these features require a Pro or Ultra subscription. Both omissions matter. Without engagement data there is no way to judge whether AI Mode is cannibalizing classic search results pages -- which carry the ad load -- or expanding total query volume. And the monetization mechanism is unstated: commission, referral fee, or eventually paid placement inside a generated recommendation.

The read for founders

This is a hard week for anyone building an AI travel-planning startup. The distribution advantage Google holds in this category is not marginal, and the partner list means supply is not the wedge either. The remaining defensible positions are the ones Google structurally will not serve: complex multi-leg or group itineraries, corporate travel policy enforcement, and loyalty-point optimization that requires acting against airline interests. Points display inside AI Mode just took a chunk out of that last one.

The disclosure to watch is whether recommendation ranking inside AI Mode ever becomes purchasable. Google says it is not today.

The regulatory shadow

Google is adding transactional capability to a search product while still operating under the remedies phase of the US antitrust ruling on search distribution, and while the European Commission continues to examine self-preferencing in vertical search. Putting hotel booking inside an AI answer, with commercial partners selected by Google, is a textbook self-preferencing question waiting to be asked -- the previous version of it, Google Shopping, produced a EUR 2.4 billion fine in the EU. The company will argue AI Mode is a different product with different economics. Regulators in Brussels and Washington have already signaled they view AI surfaces as a continuation of the search case, not an exception to it.
