MagicSchool is an AI platform built for schools, founded in Denver, Colorado, in 2023. The company describes its customers as district leaders, educators and students. For teachers, the product handles routine work such as planning lessons, differentiating material for different learners and giving feedback. Students use it, through their schools, to get support and work through ideas with guidance, and districts use it to roll out AI in a way that is visible and fits their existing systems.^[1]

The product began as a set of discrete tools for teachers. Three months after launch, in August 2023, the company said it offered more than 50 tools covering quiz generation, text leveling, diagnostic assessment, lesson plans, word problems and IEP generation. In mid-2024 it added MagicSchool for Students, which lets educators build and customize AI tools for their own students. Founder and CEO Adeel Khan told TechCrunch the company works mainly with OpenAI's APIs but also uses Anthropic and others, and runs A/B tests to decide which model fits which task.^{[2],[3],[4],[1]}

By December 2025 the company was describing its direction as an 'AI Operating System for Schools': a single workspace for planning, communication, differentiation and assessment, an assistant that understands a district's curriculum and expectations, and a district-level layer that connects approved knowledge and data with privacy controls. Teachers can use the platform free; schools and districts pay.^[5],[4]

Khan came up with the idea in late 2022, when ChatGPT was in the headlines, while on a career break. He had spent his career in public schools as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and district administrator, starting with Teach for America, and founded a Denver charter high school, DSST: Conservatory Green High School. His first demos to former colleagues did not stick because the raw chatbot interface cost teachers more time than it saved; the fix was tightly scoped tools with education-specific prompting behind the scenes.^[4],[6]

By June 2024 the company said more than 2 million teachers and more than 3,000 schools and districts were using its products, and by July 2024 it put the figures at over 2 million educators signed up and over 4,000 school and district partners. In February 2025 it said it was partnered with more than 10,000 schools, with an educator using the product in nearly every U.S. school district and in 160 countries, and that over 6 million educators had signed up. In December 2025 it said its student product, MagicStudent, had grown over 300 percent year over year in Student Rooms.^{[4],[3],[6],[5]}

MagicSchool announced a $2.4 million seed round on August 23, 2023, led by Range Ventures with GSV Ventures, Rethink Education, Charter School Growth Fund, Gary Community Investments, Transcend Fund and Ednovate Capital participating, plus angels including Elijah Mayfield, Ted Dintersmith, Samyr Quereshi, Roger Luo, Niels Hoven and partners from Reach Capital. Its initial investors were Other Ventures and Raheel Khan.^[2],[1]

In June 2024 it closed a $15 million Series A led by Bain Capital Ventures. Adobe Ventures and Common Sense Media joined the round, along with individuals including Replit founder Amjad Masad, Clever co-founders Tyler Bosmeny and Rafael Garcia and Outschool co-founder Amir Nathoo. Bain Capital Ventures partner Christina Melas-Kyriazi framed the bet as the application layer that follows infrastructure investment in model companies. Khan did not disclose the valuation.^[4]

On February 11, 2025, the company announced a $45 million Series B led by Valor Equity Partners, with Bain Capital Ventures, Adobe Ventures, Atreides Management and Smash Capital participating. Khan said the round was meant to expand product and engineering, strengthen partnerships, grow the customer experience team and expand safety testing, and that schools had asked about the long-term solvency of edtech startups, which made the raise partly about signalling staying power.^[6]

Adeel Khan is founder and CEO. The company says more than half of its team has worked in schools, from classrooms to leadership roles. No other executives are named on the pages reviewed.^[1],[6]

Named district users include Hillsborough County Public Schools, which the company says brought the tool to 7,000 educators, Midway ISD and West Vancouver Schools. The company also lists a partnership with Relay Graduate School of Education.^[1],[5],[6]
