What Factory does

Its Factory Router picks a model for each task, which the company says cuts token spend by more than 60%.[1] Factory said it will spend the money on research, product and global go-to-market.[1] Factory competes with coding tools from Anthropic, OpenAI and SpaceX, which owns Cursor.[1]

Business model and customers

Factory sells enterprises a software-development platform in which AI agents build, test and maintain code across the whole development lifecycle under human governance.[2] Customers can run it on Factory's managed cloud, on their own servers or in fully air-gapped environments, and choose which AI models it uses.[1] Factory says hundreds of thousands of developers use the platform, at customers including Nvidia, Blackstone, Royal Bank of Canada, Palo Alto Networks and Adobe.[2]

Leadership

  • It was founded in 2023 by Matan Grinberg, the CEO, and Eno Reyes, and is headquartered in San Francisco.[2]

Factory profile

written 2026-10-24

San Francisco enterprise AI coding company founded in 2023; raised $200 million at a $5 billion valuation in September 2026, more than triple its April price.

What Factory does

Factory sells large enterprises a platform for running what it calls an autonomous software factory: an AI system that works around the clock to build software under the customer's control, with humans governing measurable outcomes. Instead of stitching together separate coding agents and tools, a customer's engineering teams govern one system that spans the whole software development lifecycle. Customers control how the system learns, which AI models it uses and where it runs, whether on Factory's managed cloud, on their own premises or in fully air-gapped environments.[1]

Factory describes this as giving enterprises "sovereign intelligence": control over how their software factory learns and runs, plus visibility into readiness, effectiveness and return on investment so the system stays aligned with business goals. Its engineers, researchers and forward-deployed teams work alongside enterprise customers to stand up their software factories, and the company says it hires for "clock speed and conviction."[1],[2]

Factory competes with Anthropic, OpenAI and SpaceX, which owns Cursor, all of which sell AI coding tools, and with Cognition, maker of Devin, which TechCrunch calls Factory's biggest competitor.[3],[4]

History

Factory was founded in 2023 by Matan Grinberg and Eno Reyes with the stated mission of bringing autonomy to software engineering so that software builds and improves itself. The company is headquartered in San Francisco.[1]

In late September 2026 the company was in a public dispute. Grinberg alleged he had fired Chris Degnan of RPT Partners as a board advisor because he feared Degnan might have shared confidential information with Cognition, which Degnan had joined as chief revenue officer. Degnan disputed this, saying he resigned and had turned down a competing job offer from Grinberg. Vinod Khosla, whose firm is an investor in both Factory and Cognition, called Factory a "struggling second tier competitor" and accused Grinberg of lying about the firing.[4]

Days later, on October 5, 2026, Menlo Ventures partner Matt Murphy announced that Menlo had invested in Factory as part of the round announced in September. Menlo did not say how much; a source told TechCrunch the check was significant and that Menlo would have invested more if there had been room. Menlo is not an investor in Cognition. Sequoia's Shaun Maguire, also a Factory backer, publicly supported Grinberg and said Menlo was "on a tear." Murphy is known for backing Anthropic when it looked like an also-ran to OpenAI, and TechCrunch reported that some VCs were now calling Factory "the next Anthropic."[4]

Funding

On September 15, 2026, Factory announced a $200 million financing at a $5 billion valuation, more than triple the $1.5 billion valuation it carried in April 2026. The round brought total funding to over $400 million. Investors were Blackstone, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners, Evantic Capital, Sound Ventures, NEA, Mantis VC and Clearlake, plus angels including Nico Rosberg, Brad Gerstner and Marc Benioff. No lead investor was named.[1]

Factory said it would use the capital for research, product and global go-to-market. The release's boilerplate also lists Nvidia and J.P. Morgan among its investors.[2],[1]

People

Matan Grinberg is co-founder and CEO. Eno Reyes is co-founder. Chris Degnan of RPT Partners was a board advisor until September 2026.[1],[4]

Customers and partners

Factory says hundreds of thousands of developers use the platform. Named customers are Nvidia, Blackstone, Royal Bank of Canada, Palo Alto Networks, Adobe and T-Mobile. Blackstone is both a customer and an investor.[2],[1]
