Anthropic launched a connector for its Economic Index research on July 22, letting any Claude user explore real AI-usage data directly inside a chat conversation by enabling it from the connectors directory in claude.ai, rather than reading through Anthropic's periodic static research reports.
The Economic Index itself tracks how Claude usage breaks down by occupation, task type and industry -- previously published as standalone reports, most recently the June 2026 edition -- and the new connector turns that dataset into something users can query conversationally: which jobs use Claude most for coding versus writing versus analysis, how usage patterns have shifted over recent quarters, and where adoption remains thin.
The timing is notable given Anthropic's week: this launch lands the same day as escalating headlines around the White House's accusation that Moonshot AI improperly distilled Anthropic's Fable model to build Kimi K3, and shortly after AMD's $5 billion infrastructure commitment. A proactive, data-transparency-focused product launch gives Anthropic a rare opportunity to control its own narrative during a week otherwise dominated by geopolitical and competitive headlines about it rather than from it.
For researchers, policymakers and labor economists, a live-queryable version of real AI-usage data is a meaningfully better tool than static PDF reports for tracking how quickly AI adoption is actually reshaping specific occupations -- and for VCs, it's a useful diligence tool for testing whether a portfolio company's target occupation or workflow shows up as a genuinely heavy-usage category or a thin one before backing an AI-native startup targeting it.
