Analysis
Ambi, a startup founded by former Plaud executive Peter Mo, has raised $26 million across multiple funding rounds led by Luminous Ventures, according to TechCrunch. Huaqin, an original design manufacturer, also participated. Mo, Ambi's co-founder and CEO, left Plaud -- the wearable AI-recorder company -- to build a rival ambient-AI product.
An insider's bet against his former employer
Ambi's current product is a meeting-notes app for iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch that can listen continuously, with ambient capture off by default, and an AI agent that offers real-time suggestions during meetings drawing on a user's calendar, knowledge base and web data. The company is also building a desktop app and a hardware device with a screen, speaker, camera and microphones -- a direct extension into the wearable-recorder category Mo knows from the inside.
Ambi competes against Plaud itself, plus Littlebird and Minimi, in a category that has grown quickly on the promise of frictionless meeting capture but has also drawn scrutiny over consent and privacy when devices record by default. Luminous Ventures' other bets, Meituan and Unitree Robotics, give Ambi a backer with hardware manufacturing relationships relevant to its planned device, which is why Huaqin's participation as an ODM partner alongside the funding is notable.
Capture-off-by-default is Ambi's answer to the trust problem that has dogged always-listening hardware, but it's a default a growth-stage company under pressure to show engagement metrics could quietly change later. The $26 million figure spanning multiple rounds, rather than one priced round, also suggests investors are still testing the category's willingness to pay rather than committing to a single large check the way some AI-hardware rounds have this year.
Whether Ambi can out-execute Plaud on the hardware side, not just the software, is the test that will separate this round from a long list of ambient-AI apps competing for the same feature set.
