THE RUNDOWN

1

Advent's flagship fund has more than doubled in a decade, from $13 billion in 2016 to nearly $27 billion now, tracking the broader run-up in global buyout capital.

2

The firm's new mid-market strategy, raised since launching in March, targets smaller buyouts than the flagship -- a size tier many larger funds have abandoned.

3

At more than $109 billion in assets, Advent ranks 16th on the PEI 300 list of the world's largest private equity firms.

4

Advent says it returned about $13 billion across 27 businesses in 2026 even as it invested roughly $10 billion across 38 companies, a sign capital is still turning over despite a slower exit environment broadly.

A flagship fund that grew from $13 billion to $27 billion in a decade is a story about LP concentration as much as fundraising success -- the real diligence question for allocators is whether Advent's deal pipeline can deploy $30 billion without drifting into deal sizes or sectors outside its five core verticals. The new mid-market vehicle is the more interesting signal: it's a bet that smaller buyouts still clear better returns than crowded mega-deals.

Analysis

Advent International has raised $30 billion across its global private equity fund complex, the Boston-based firm said.

The total includes nearly $27 billion for its 11th flagship fund, which exceeded its $26 billion target to become, per the firm, the largest buyout fund to close so far in 2026.

It also includes more than $3 billion for a new mid-market investment strategy the firm launched in March. Pulse has previously tracked Advent's reported interest in the PayPal-Stripe buyout saga, where the firm emerged as a rumored bidder before that deal fell apart.

“It also includes more than $3 billion for a new mid-market investment strategy the firm launched in March.”

What Advent International does

Advent is a private equity firm that traces its roots to a 1984 spinout from TA Associates by founder Peter Brooke, according to Wikipedia, and is today headquartered in Boston.

The firm invests across five core sectors -- business and financial services, consumer, healthcare, industrial, and technology -- primarily in North America and Europe, while also operating through Asia-Pacific and Latin America teams. Advent reports more than $109 billion in assets under management, a track record of 460 investments across 45 countries, and a team of more than 290 investment professionals, led by managing partners and co-chairs James Brocklebank and John Maldonado.

In 2026 alone, the firm says it returned roughly $13 billion across 27 portfolio businesses while investing about $10 billion across 38 new and existing companies.

Advent's fundraising history

  • 1987 -- International Network Fund, the firm's first institutional private equity vehicle.
  • 2008 -- sixth global fund, closed with €6.6 billion of commitments.
  • March 2016 -- eighth global flagship, $13 billion.
  • 2026 -- 11th flagship (GPE XI), ~$27 billion, more than double the 2016 figure a decade later.

Advent's new mid-market strategy, raised since launching in March, marks the firm's first dedicated smaller-check vehicle using the same sector teams as the flagship.

Who backs Advent's funds

Advent's funds draw from public and private pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, endowments, foundations, institutional asset managers, family offices and high-net-worth individuals, the firm said, without naming specific limited partners in this round.

Private equity's fundraising market

Global private equity assets under management stood at roughly $8.6 trillion at the end of 2024 and are forecast to reach about $11.8 trillion by 2030, according to data compiled by Walnut. Advent ranks 16th on the PEI 300 list of the world's largest private equity firms by that measure.

The firm's mid-market fund targets smaller buyouts than the flagship, with equity checks up to $350 million in companies valued up to $1.25 billion -- a deal-size band many of the industry's largest funds, chasing ever-bigger checks, have effectively vacated.

What to watch

The test for Advent's new scale is deployment pace, not just fundraising. However, a flagship fund that has roughly doubled twice in a decade carries a real risk: it needs a correspondingly larger pipeline of buyout targets to avoid either sitting on uncalled capital or drifting toward deal sizes and sectors outside the five verticals the firm says it specializes in.
