Updated October 30, 2026: Nitro prices re-checked ($2.99 and $9.99 a month, unchanged), Nitro Rewards perks added, and a new Nitro promotion reported on October 22. See "What changed on October 30, 2026" below. The valuation is unchanged: Forge Price $8.53 billion as of July 8, 2026.
Updated October 1, 2026 (correction): an earlier version of this page said Discord sells no ads, put its valuation at about $20 billion, and gave unsourced figures for revenue ($750 million+), revenue mix, user growth, peer ARPU and Slack. Discord has sold opt-in, rewarded ads since 2024. The valuation now uses Forge Global's $8.53 billion Forge Price (July 8, 2026). Revenue is shown only as third-party estimates with their dates (Sacra: $725 million ARR at end-2024). Nitro, Boost and fee details now come from Discord's own pages, and figures we could not source were removed.
How does Discord make money? Mostly from Nitro subscriptions, according to Forge Global (citing 2023 data), plus Server Boosts, platform fees and a growing rewarded-ad business. Discord doesn't disclose revenue; Sacra estimates $725 million in annual recurring revenue at the end of 2024. Its implied net worth is about $8.5 billion: Forge Global's Forge Price was $8.53 billion on July 8, 2026, 44% below the $15.2 billion valuation of its 2021 round.
Discord launched in 2015 (Sacra lists 2015 as its founding year) as a chat and voice app for gamers. It tried to reach wider audiences after the pandemic, then decided in 2024 to refocus on gaming, according to Forge Global. It has raised more than $1 billion across 10 primary rounds (Forge), walked away from acquisition talks with Microsoft that valued it at around $10 billion in April 2021 (TechCrunch), and reportedly filed confidentially for a U.S. IPO in January 2026 (Bloomberg, as summarized by Sacra and Forge). Discord doesn't disclose revenue, so every revenue figure below is a third-party estimate, labelled with its source and date.
Discord does not disclose revenue. ARR is Sacra's estimate for end-2024. MAU is Discord's "more than 200 million" from its October 2, 2025 press release; its September 29, 2026 release cites more than 90 million daily active users as of Q2 2026. Valuation is Forge Global's Forge Price as of July 8, 2026; 44% = 1 β ($8.53B Γ· $15.2B). ARR per MAU is a Value Add VC estimate: Sacra's end-2024 ARR divided by 200 million. It is an upper bound because MAU is "200M+", and the two figures come from different dates. See our Discord IPO breakdown for more.
What changed on October 30, 2026: Nitro prices hold, Nitro adds partner perks
Updated October 30, 2026. Discord's implied valuation on this page is still the Forge Price of $8.53 billion from July 8, 2026. We could not open Forge Global's pages on October 30 (the site returned an access error), so that is the latest Forge figure we have verified, and nothing below changes it. What did change is the product side of the story: Nitro, the subscription that Forge says drives most of Discord's revenue, kept its prices while gaining partner benefits, and a new Nitro perk was reported on October 22.
| Date | What changed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| May 11, 2026 | Nitro Rewards launches: Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition (50+ games, 10 hours of cloud gaming a month, up to $25 a year in Xbox Store earnings), 250 Orbs a month, 20% more Orbs on Quests, and Logitech G, SteelSeries and KontrolFreek discounts. New to this page as of October 30. | Discord press release |
| Oct 22, 2026 | Dexerto reports a Nitro promotion of 20% off YouTube Premium for six months (terms apply), plus a "Move Toβ¦" shortcut for server folders and a media-engine rewrite from C++ to Rust. | Dexerto |
| Oct 30, 2026 | Discord's Nitro page still lists Nitro Basic at $2.99/month and Nitro at $9.99/month, and lists Xbox Game Pass (Starter Edition), Monthly Orbs and an Orbs Multiplier among the benefits. | Discord Nitro page |
| Oct 30, 2026 | StockAnalysis shows a Clarity secondary-market price of $29.46 per share for Discord, with no implied valuation and a last priced valuation of $15B (September 15, 2021). | StockAnalysis |
Did Discord raise Nitro prices in 2026?
Not on the evidence we checked. Discord's Nitro page lists the same $2.99 and $9.99 monthly prices on October 30 that this page recorded on October 1, and Discord's own May 11 Nitro Rewards post says "Your Nitro membership is still the same price, and Game Pass is now part of it." In other words, Discord added value to the $9.99 tier instead of raising the price. Discord does not disclose how many people subscribe, so the revenue effect of the added perks is unknown.
How do Nitro Rewards connect to Discord's ad business?
Our read: the Orbs benefit links the subscription to the advertising product. Discord's Nitro Rewards release says members receive 250 Orbs automatically each month and an Orbs multiplier that lets players earn 20% more Orbs when completing Quests, and Orbs are the reward earned by completing the Quests described below. A subscriber who earns more Orbs per Quest has a reason to complete more sponsored Quests, which is what advertisers pay for. Discord has not said that is the design intent; it is an inference from how the two programs fit together.
What does the $29.46 secondary price mean for the valuation?
Nothing we can convert into a valuation yet. StockAnalysis credits Clarity for the secondary-market price of $29.46 per share as of October 30, 2026 and shows the implied valuation as unavailable, and the page does not give a share count, so multiplying it out would be a guess. We therefore keep the Forge Price of $8.53 billion as the headline, dated July 8, and treat $29.46 as a data point to watch. GamesBeat's September 29, 2026 report, cited below, said Discord had not announced an IPO date; if it files publicly, the S-1 will replace these secondary-market indicators with audited numbers.
How does Discord make money
Discord makes money through five main lines and doesn't disclose the split between them. Forge Global, citing 2023 data, says most of Discord's revenue comes from Discord Nitro, its subscription. Discord's Nitro page (checked October 1, 2026) lists two tiers: Nitro Basic at $2.99/month, with custom emoji anywhere and 50MB uploads, and Nitro at $9.99/month, which adds custom profiles, 1GB uploads, HD video streaming, and 2 Server Boosts plus 30% off extra Boosts. Since May 11, 2026, Nitro also includes Nitro Rewards: Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition with 50+ games and 10 hours of cloud gaming a month, 250 Orbs a month, and partner discounts (Discord press release); Discord's Nitro page lists the same prices as of October 30, 2026.
Server Boosts are a second line. Users buy Boosts and apply them to a server to unlock perks for every member. Per Discord's Server Boosting FAQ (checked October 1, 2026): Level 1 (2 Boosts) adds 50 emoji slots and 128kbps audio; Level 2 (7 Boosts) adds 256kbps audio, a 50MB upload limit for all members and a static server banner; Level 3 (14 Boosts) adds 384kbps audio, a 100MB upload limit and a custom invite link. Boosts can also unlock add-on perks such as Server Tags, at 3 Boosts each. Nitro subscribers get 2 Boosts and 30% off extra Boosts; Nitro Basic subscribers get neither.
The third and fourth lines are platform fees, set out in Discord's Monetization Terms (effective June 6, 2024). Server Subscriptions let server owners charge members for premium channels or roles, and Discord takes a 10% platform fee plus payment processing fees. Premium Apps let third-party developers sell paid features in their apps and bots; Discord takes 15% until a developer team's apps pass $1 million in total payments, then 30%. The fifth and newest line is advertising, covered below. Discord has not disclosed a revenue mix across any of these lines, so nothing on this page should be read as an official breakdown.
Discord's ad business: opt-in, rewarded Quests
Discord long positioned itself as ad-free; then-CEO Jason Citron had said it would not rely on ads the way Facebook, Instagram and TikTok do (MobileSyrup, April 1, 2024). That changed with Sponsored Quests, introduced in April 2024: game makers pay for a task, such as playing a game while a friend watches, and players who complete it get a reward. By March 2025, Discord had added Video Quests, which reward players for watching a video; the first ran for Max's Dune: Prophecy, and Discord said it would pilot Video Quests on mobile in June 2025 (Discord, March 20, 2025). Discord launched Orbs, a virtual reward earned by completing Quests and redeemable for items such as Nitro credits, globally on July 14, 2025 (Discord), and made Video Quests on Mobile available on October 2, 2025 (Discord).
Discord announced Play Quest+ on August 20, 2026. It rewards in-game actions such as finishing a match or a tutorial, with EA's Battlefield 6 as the first campaign (Discord). On September 29, 2026, Discord announced Ads Manager, its first self-serve campaign tool with auction-based pricing, and a new mobile-first Video Quests format that rewards about 15 seconds of viewing. Both start with a select group of advertisers, with fully self-serve access planned for early 2027 (Discord; GamesBeat). The original format is now called Video Quests Reserve.
Discord has not disclosed how much revenue these formats generate. Sacra says ads are "emerging as a major second engine" and credits them with helping lift ARR from an estimated $660 million in August 2024 to $725 million by the end of 2024. Discord says Quests had a 97% median ad completion rate (internal data, June 30, 2026). Sacra also names the tension: Discord's "low ARPU reflects the challenges of monetizing pseudonymous social platforms, and adding advertising risks damaging the user experience." Whether subscriptions, platform fees and ads together can raise that per-user figure is a central question for Discord's IPO case.
Discord's growth and path to profitability
Sacra estimates Discord's ARR grew from $45 million in 2019 to $600 million in 2023 and $725 million at the end of 2024, up about 21% year over year. Forge Global cites revenue, a different measure from ARR, of $575 million in 2023, up from $135 million in 2020. In January 2024, Discord laid off 17% of staff, or 170 people; then-CEO Jason Citron wrote that the workforce had grown 5x since 2020 and that the cuts would help build "a strong and profitable business" (The Verge, January 11, 2024). The Verge reported at the time that Discord had yet to become profitable. Sacra reports that Discord posted positive adjusted EBITDA for five consecutive quarters as of April 2025. That same month, Humam Sakhnini, formerly vice chairman at Activision Blizzard, succeeded Citron as CEO, with Citron staying on the board (Forge). See our full breakdown of whether Discord is actually profitable for the GAAP-versus-adjusted distinction and the confidential IPO filing that should eventually force a real answer.
Discord has raised more than $1 billion across 10 primary rounds, per Forge. Its last primary round, in September 2021, raised $500 million at a $15.2 billion valuation and was led by Dragoneer Investment Group. Earlier investors include Benchmark Capital, Tencent, Greylock Partners and Index Ventures, and Greenoaks Capital led a 2018 round (Forge). In January 2026, Bloomberg reported that Discord had confidentially filed for a U.S. IPO, with Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan as lead underwriters, per Sacra's summary. As of GamesBeat's September 29, 2026 report, Discord had not announced an IPO date. Private-market pricing sits below the 2021 round: Forge Global's Forge Price valued Discord at $8.53 billion on July 8, 2026, 44% below $15.2 billion but above the $7 billion valuation of its second 2020 round. Discord's Estimated ARR, 2019 to End-2024
Sacra estimates Discord's ARR rose from $45M in 2019 to $725M at the end of 2024, including $660M in August 2024. Discord does not disclose revenue.

Discord's Valuation History ($B)
Discord's primary-round valuations climbed to $15.2B in 2021; Forge's secondary-market indicator put it at $8.53B on July 8, 2026, 44% below that peak.

Discord vs Slack: free communities vs paid seats
Discord and Slack both offer real-time messaging and voice, but they charge different people. Slack, a Salesforce company, sells seats to businesses: its Pro plan lists at $8.75 per user per month billed monthly, or $7.25 billed annually, and Business+ at $18 or $15 (slack.com/pricing, checked October 1, 2026). Discord's core features are free for any number of users, and it earns from optional upgrades, platform fees and ads. Sacra describes Discord's model as flipping Slack's, which "charges $7-13 per seat and becomes prohibitively expensive for large communities."
The tradeoff is reach versus revenue per user. On the Value Add VC estimate above, Discord's ARR works out to $3.63 or less per monthly user per year, less than one month of a single Slack Pro seat at list price. Whether Discord can raise that figure through Premium Apps, Server Subscriptions and its newer ad formats is the main question for its business model.
Bottom line: Discord makes money from Nitro subscriptions ($2.99 or $9.99/month), Server Boosts, platform fees on Server Subscriptions (10%) and Premium Apps (15%, or 30% past $1 million in payments), and, since 2024, opt-in, rewarded ads (Quests, Video Quests, Play Quest+). It doesn't disclose revenue; Sacra estimates $725 million in ARR at the end of 2024. Its implied net worth is about $8.5 billion: Forge Global's Forge Price was $8.53 billion on July 8, 2026, 44% below the $15.2 billion valuation of its 2021 round. If Discord goes public, the IPO will put a public-market price on these numbers; see the IPO timeline.
