Analysis
Crunchbase counted 38 companies joining its Unicorn Board in September 2026, adding $71 billion in combined value in a single month, according to Crunchbase News. That brings the year-to-date total to 311 new unicorns through September -- putting 2026 on pace to be the second-busiest year for new billion-dollar startups on record, behind only 2021, when more than 600 companies crossed the threshold.
Semiconductors produced the most new unicorns of any single sector in September, with five companies crossing the threshold:
- Fab2 (Austin) -- $500M Series A at a $3.7B valuation
- Celero Communications (Irvine) -- $275M Series C, valued above $3B, $415M raised to date
- Evas Intelligence (Beijing) -- $298M raised at a $2.2B valuation
- SiMa.ai (San Jose) -- $150M Series C at a $1.45B valuation, $500M raised to date
- Micronano Core (Hangzhou) -- $149M Series C at a $1B valuation
“($2 billion, Munich) and Precision Neuroscience (more than $1 billion, New York).”
Fintech, space technology and biotech each added four new unicorns, including Barq ($1.85 billion, Saudi Arabia), The Exploration Co. ($2 billion, Munich) and Precision Neuroscience (more than $1 billion, New York).
Geographically, 21 of the 38 are U.S.-headquartered and six are based in China -- a lopsided split that cuts against the narrative, common in VC circles a year ago, that China was closing the unicorn-production gap.
The month's bigger story may be how fast existing unicorns are re-rating rather than how many new ones are minted: Cognition's valuation nearly doubled to $48 billion from $26 billion four months earlier, and Crusoe tripled to $31 billion from $10 billion a year prior.
Mistral climbed to $24.4 billion from $13.7 billion over the same span. Those step-ups, concentrated in AI infrastructure and coding tools rather than consumer AI applications, are outpacing the rate at which brand-new companies are crossing the unicorn line -- a sign late-stage investors are chasing proven AI bets hardest of all.
