Suno, the AI music-generation startup, said this week it will introduce audio watermarking and fingerprinting technology to make AI-generated songs easier to identify when they show up on other platforms, alongside new limits on how many songs users can mass-download and distribute, according to TechCrunch. CEO Mikey Shulman framed the changes as new "transparency tools" built around the idea that AI should enable originality rather than imitation, per Billboard.
The announcement lands about a week after a German court held Suno liable for infringing copyrighted songs -- a landmark ruling in a wave of litigation from record labels and artist-rights groups that has followed the company since its 2024 launch. Watermarking doesn't resolve the underlying legal question of whether training on copyrighted recordings without a license is permissible -- it addresses a narrower, downstream problem: making it harder for AI-generated tracks to pass as human-made once they leave Suno's platform and land on Spotify, YouTube or TikTok. Labels have specifically flagged uncredited AI tracks flooding streaming platforms as a revenue and attribution risk, separate from the training-data dispute itself.
The bigger unresolved question is whether feature-level fixes like watermarking satisfy regulators and labels asking for control over training data itself, not just labeling of the output -- a distinction likely to matter far more to the pending lawsuits than what Suno ships this week.
