Benioff just admitted the model layer isn't Salesforce's fight to win, and that's the correct call -- CRM data plus permissions plus workflow beats a better foundation model on its own every time. The diligence question for enterprise AI founders: if Salesforce needs Anthropic's reasoning to make Agentforce credible, what exactly are you differentiating on against a Claudeforce plug-in with your prospect's own CRM data already inside it? Watch Agentforce net revenue retention next quarter -- that's the number that tells you if this is durable or a launch-week spike.

Analysis

Salesforce shares had their second-best trading day ever on Thursday, jumping 22.6% after the company beat second-quarter estimates on both revenue and profit and raised full-year guidance. Fiscal 2027 second-quarter revenue reached $11.35 billion, up 10.8% year over year, while adjusted earnings of $5.90 per share beat the Street's $3.27 estimate by a wide margin. Net income climbed 73.3% year over year to $4.84 billion, according to the company's earnings release.

The AI numbers were the headline inside the headline. Annualized revenue from Agentforce, Salesforce's autonomous-agent product line, topped $1.5 billion, up 240% year over year, with management citing triple-digit bookings growth as more customers moved from pilots into production and adopted consumption-based pricing through Flex Credits. CEO Marc Benioff paired the results with the reveal of Claudeforce, a joint interface built with Anthropic that layers Claude's reasoning on top of Salesforce's data, workflows and permissions -- a plug-in shipping with 37 prebuilt sales skills that let Claude compose emails, update records and take other actions inside a customer's existing Salesforce instance.

Why Anthropic, and why now

Salesforce has spent two years building Agentforce as its own answer to the enterprise-agent question, competing directly with Microsoft Copilot and a long tail of agent startups. Partnering with Anthropic rather than building the underlying reasoning layer in-house is a tacit admission that foundation-model quality still differentiates, even for a company with Salesforce's own AI ambitions. It's also a marquee enterprise validation for Anthropic the same week it is fighting the Pentagon in court and pitching IPO investors on a $30 trillion opportunity -- Pulse has tracked Anthropic's enterprise push as it builds a revenue story distinct from consumer chat.

The competitive frame

Benioff has spent the past year insisting Salesforce, not a chatbot interface, will be where enterprise AI work actually happens -- a direct shot at Microsoft's Copilot bundling strategy and at standalone agent startups trying to sell into the same CRM data. Claudeforce is the clearest evidence yet that Salesforce is willing to concede model supremacy to Anthropic in exchange for keeping the workflow, permissions and customer relationship. That is a bet Salesforce's own $200 billion market cap can absorb; a smaller enterprise SaaS company making the same trade is betting its differentiation on someone else's model roadmap.

The counterweight

A 22.6% one-day pop is a market reset for a stock that had been priced for AI disruption risk, not proof Agentforce economics work at scale -- $1.5 billion in annualized revenue is still a rounding error against Salesforce's $46 billion guided top line. And bundling Claude this deeply into Salesforce's product also means Salesforce's own AI roadmap is now partly hostage to Anthropic's model release cadence and pricing, a dependency Benioff didn't have to accept a year ago. The rally says investors believe the AI story finally has revenue behind it; it says nothing yet about whether Claudeforce retains customers once the launch enthusiasm fades.
