The investor roster matters more than the $1.05B number here -- RWE and JERA are power generators, not generalist VCs, and when utilities write an early-stage check it's usually because they see a direct operational fix for a problem they already have, not a financial return play. The diligence item I'd push on: how many megawatts of verified, dispatchable flexibility Emerald AI has actually delivered under the Silicon Valley Power program, not just contracted -- pilots that trade flexibility for faster interconnection are easy to announce and much harder to operate reliably at gigawatt scale.
