DARPA and the US Air Force flew a modified F-16 under full AI control as part of the Viper Experimentation and Next-generation Operations Model, or VENOM, program, with a human safety pilot able to switch between manual and AI control mid-flight "with the flip of a switch," according to The Debrief. The aircraft is a standard operational F-16 retrofitted with a bolt-on hardware and software kit, not a one-off research airframe -- a distinction DARPA is emphasizing because it means the AI-control capability could, in principle, be added to existing fleet aircraft rather than requiring a purpose-built platform.
The flights build directly on the X-62A VISTA program, which proved in 2024 that an AI agent could autonomously fly and dogfight a fighter jet; VENOM's contribution is moving that same capability from a dedicated test aircraft to a modified frontline-style F-16, according to Army Recognition. Flight operations began in June with piloted validation runs to confirm the hardware and software worked safely, before transitioning in July to missions where the onboard AI agent took autonomous control for portions of the flight while the safety pilot monitored performance throughout.
The near-term significance isn't autonomous dogfighting readiness -- DARPA has framed VENOM as an evaluation and trust-building program, not a deployment timeline -- but the fact that a modified, fleet-representative F-16 can run the same AI-piloting stack the one-off VISTA aircraft used is the more consequential engineering result for how fast this capability could scale across the Air Force's existing inventory if the Pentagon funds it.
