Current AI, a nonprofit founded in February 2025 by Martin Tisne, is building open, public AI infrastructure with $400 million in total committed funding -- seeded with $100 million from the French government and joined by the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, DeepMind and Salesforce. Its flagship product, Suno Sutra, is a pocket-sized offline device that runs AI in 22 Indian languages without requiring an internet connection, built in partnership with Bhashini, India's government AI language division, and first unveiled at the India AI Summit in February.
The explicit framing is a direct counter-positioning to commercial AI labs. CEO Ayah Bdeir has said: "If AI is truly a transformative technology, if it's going to change every aspect of everyone's life, there has to be a public alternative... like the World Wide Web, available to anyone, for free." That's a pointed comparison -- the open web versus a small number of commercially controlled AI platforms -- and it positions Current AI as infrastructure philanthropy rather than a startup competing for the same enterprise customers as OpenAI or Anthropic.

The nonprofit's first grant cohort deployed $3.2 million across four organizations in Kenya, Lebanon and the Brazilian Amazon, targeting AI development for underrepresented languages and communities that commercial labs have limited financial incentive to prioritize -- markets too small or too fragmented for frontier labs to build dedicated language support, but where the social value of accessible AI tools may be highest.
The timing is notable against a backdrop of AI investment overwhelmingly concentrated in a handful of frontier labs raising tens of billions of dollars each. Current AI's $400 million is a rounding error next to Anthropic's $65 billion Series H-1, but it's targeting a genuinely different problem: access and language coverage that commercial economics don't currently reward.
What to watch: whether Suno Sutra achieves meaningful device distribution in India beyond its initial pilot, and whether other governments follow France's lead in seeding public AI infrastructure funds.
