What Eka Robotics does

Eka Robotics builds a force-sensitive robotic gripper and a deep-learning model that lets robots pick up and handle objects by feel.[1] The two first met in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley.[1] The company has an office in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[2] Instead of a vision-language-action model, Eka trains a vision-force-action model that focuses on force inputs.[1] It trains with a physics simulator that models the forces a robot meets while grasping, used as a reinforcement learning environment at scale.[1] The founders say they can generate thousands of hours of robot experience in minutes.[1] Eka says its robot picks about 1,500 objects of up to 1 kg per hour, compared with about 600 for a person, and succeeds more than 95% of the time.[1] The gripper costs less than $1,000 and is rated for 5 million duty cycles.[2]

Business model and customers

Pilots with unnamed industrial customers cover pick-and-place and wire-handling work.[2] Eka said the money will take its model into more tasks and speed up customer deployments.[2]

Leadership

  • It was founded by MIT professor Pulkit Agrawal and former Google DeepMind researcher Tuomas Haarnoja.[1]
